& THE ANCIENT BLOODSLast Night: Blak Day Out is ready to roll into Magandjin’s King St precinct on Saturday 24 August, celebrating the end of Open Season 2024 with a free and all-ages street party brought to life by Blak Social.
Originally planned to kick off Open Season on the first day of Winter, inclement weather forecasts forced the event to be rescheduled and First Night: Blak Day Out became Last Night: Blak Day Out. With most of the artists able to accommodate the date change, the original lineup remains mostly intact with the addition of popular country and blues artist Sue Ray to the 2024 event.
Last Night: Blak Day Out will feature some of the continent’s most exciting First Nations artists alongside a selection of seriously good eats as a string of pop-up bars, street food stalls, Indigenous retailers, outdoor music stages, and entertainment bringing King St to life from 3:30pm – 9:30pm on Saturday 24 August.
This family-friendly event will also feature a Silent Disco with DJ Kritty, live mural painting and dance activations from The First Creatives.
Celebrated, award-winning singer and songwriter Emma Donovan has toured and recorded with the likes of Paul Kelly, The Teskey Brothers, Paul Grabowsky, and the late Uncle Archie Roach and Aunty Ruby Hunter, and is also known for her work with acclaimed rhythm combo The Putbacks and the extraordinary Black Arm Band project. Part of the famed Donovan family of singers of the Gumbaynggirr people on her mother’s side, and the Yamatji people on her fathers, Emma regularly performs songs in Gumbaynggirr and Noongar traditional languages, and shares stories to provide her audiences with an understanding of Country and community.
Rapper and MC Dallas Woods, triple j Blak Out host and Yuin MC Nooky and Gumbaynggirr singer-songwriter Angus Field are 3%. The name is a nod to their people who make up just 3% of the Australian population. With their latest single “Won’t Stop” feat. Jess Mauboy demanding attention and their hard-hitting debut album KILLING THE DEAD about to drop later this week, Blak Day Out is your chance to be moved by the unifying power of songs that spotlight themes of First Nations deaths in custody, closing the gap and reclaiming stolen land.
Proud Gamilaraay woman Sue Ray delivers her own unique blend of country and blues that will get you outta your seats and singing along. Wielding her harmonica with reckless abandon, her set seamlessly moves from catchy foot stomping tunes through to delicate heartbreaking tear jerkers and she loves to get an audience up dancing with her banter, with crowd participation often a highlight of her shows.
With a sound inspired by reggae, alt-pop, soul and funk, BADASSMUTHA weaves her stories through lyrical wit-poetry and catchy melody; her self-assured confidence front and centre in both delivery and messaging. A Githabul, Migunberri-Yugumbeh woman she is a seasoned multidisciplinary artist who has performed with the likes of Xavier Rudd, Blue King Brown, Hot Brown Honey and Polytoxic, along with releasing music for Children as ‘Alinta & Waveney’.
The Ancient Bloods are a First Nations, youth transitional band run by Digi Youth Arts. The third iteration made up of Gara Doolah, Shaiesha Towler, Emelia Stacy and Gillian McInnes brings us into 2024 along with the release of their first EP Blended. This album stirs up generational hope, resistance and good vibes along with smooth coastal melodies which pay tribute to Yugembeh country by the Pacific Ocean, where the EP was created.
“Blak Day Out is a space for community to come together and celebrate the music being made by this continent’s very First musicians. The line-up gives audiences a taste of the vast world of Indigenous music which should be celebrated all year round,” says Blak Social’s Creative Director Alethea Beetson.
Last Night: Blak Day Out is the final event of Open Season, a stellar curated program of music and art running from May to August 2024.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
