Praise for THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES

“…These New South Whales make a line like “All good things will die, And that’ll never change” sound way too exciting.” – The FADER

“Packing hook-loaded punch after hook-loaded punch, there is nearly no space for breathing on what is shaping up to be an excellent post-hardcore record.” – DIY Magazine

“No one’s doing things quite like These New South Whales” – The Line Of Best Fit (9/10)

“Absolutely irresistible blasts of insistent, art-punk brilliance” – Kerrang! (4/5)

“TNSW also make a TV comedy about being pathetic punks. Very meta, except the actual band are great:
tight, no-frills, plaintive vocals, caustic guitar and thumping rhythms” – Mojo, 4/5

“The band is real, the TV show is a hilarious mockumentary” – NME

“Very rowdy, enjoyable punk rock” – theneedledrop

“Sydney’s most revered punk band” – triple j

“A punchy, infectious, and delicious piece of punk fun” – Nick Findlay (triple j)

These New South Whales today share their new video for ‘Changes’, the final single to come from the band’s explosive third album, TNSW, which was released on Nov 18 via Damaged Records and debuted at #9 across ARIA’s Australian Album Chart and #4 on the Vinyl Charts late last week. The ‘Changes’ video details the band across an intimate run of celebratory release weekend shows and record store signings across Brisbane/Meanjin, Sydney/Eora and Melbourne/Naarm at beloved local venues and stores including Felons Barrel Hall, Jet Black Cat Music, Frankie’s Pizza By The Slice and Record Paradise. WATCH IT HERE.

Capturing the madness was director, producer and editor Ben Timony who shares, “We didn’t want the video for Changes to be a classic tour video with road signs, airports and Maccas, rather a celebration of the album launch by only showing the intimate live sets and the band connecting with their fans. It was a magic 3 days.” Speaking to the excitement and fervour of the shows, lead vocalist Jamie Timony adds,  “Playing these intimate shows on album release weekend was a career highlight for us. So good to see the album connecting and a real honor to meet our audience on the road. Ben captured the energy of the weekend perfectly on his little handicam. Huge shoutout to all the crew that turned up and came through!”

‘Changes’ is the latest single to come from the TNSW LP. The record marks a refined new era for the band, their most sophisticated body of work yet: a 14-track tome of barrelling punk rock that polishes its heavier moments – heavier than ever – with sing-along choruses, sharp arrangements, and plenty of trademark irony and self-awareness. For every ’90s alternative reference, there’s a blast beat; for every big radio moment, a cursed instrumental aside.

Including previously released singles ‘Under the Pressure’, ‘Rotten Sun’, ‘Bending at the Knee, the latest record finds the quartet leveling up immeasurably, it’s already received support across The FADER, DIY, NME, The Line of Best Fit, and MOJO, the latter of whom wrote in their 4/5 review of the record that “it’s not even funny how comprehensively they kick the ass of most other contemporary punk-leaning ensembles.”

These New South Whales will be heading on their previously announced Australian tour of the record in March – April 2023. Pre-sale access runs live today HERE, with general on-sale tickets available from December 1. Find all tour dates and ticketing info below.

With plans to tour widely in the new year and season three of their Comedy Central series in the works, These New South Whales look set to continue confirming themselves as a once-in-a-generation Australian punk proposition.

TNSW LP is out now via Damaged Records, buy/stream it here.

About THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES

These New South Whales are a belt with many notches. Their “irresistible” songwriting (Kerrang!) and “old-school-cool energy” (The Line of Best Fit) has earned them international acclaim and a reputation as “one of the best punk bands in Australia” (triple j). Their hit Comedy Central show – touted as “the punk Flight of the Conchords” (NME) and “the best mockumentary since Spinal Tap” (Monster Children) – saw them become the first Australian band to develop their own TV series and licence it to a cable television network. And their podcast What A Great Punk ended its debut year inside Spotify’s top five music podcasts before going on to do a sold-out live run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2022. While their reputation as all-round entertainers grows, though, their music has long outgrown the comedy label that defined their formative years.

After crossing paths in Sydney’s DIY scene, Jamie Timony (vocals), Todd Andrews (guitar), Will Shepherd (bass) and Frank Sweet (drums) joined forces in 2011. Bored with the seriousness of “being in a band”, an absurdist and self-effacing sense of humour has been at the heart of all their endeavours. But what started as a passion for parody soon gave way to a genuinely great band that has followed the same trajectory as the likes of Ceremony and Turnstile, moving from straight-up punk towards a more genre-defying sound.

Over the last six years they’ve headlined tours across Australia, the UK and Europe. Their 2017 debut You Work For Us hit #6 on the Australian Vinyl Charts and #1 on the Indie Charts when it was reissued in 2021, and their 2019 follow-up I Just Do What God Tells Me To Do was nominated for the Australian Music Prize. Their latest offering, 2022’s self-titled TNSW, completes their evolution from compelling Aussie basement punk into a more sprawling, international space with the chops to go toe to toe with any of today’s most lauded guitar bands. Now “premier punk outfit” isn’t just the cocky phrase the band uses to describe themselves in their mockumentary – it’s a real life statement of fact.
