Singles Chartifacts:
#1: Glass Animals ‘Heat Waves’ – For the third straight week ‘Heat Waves’ by Glass Animals sits at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The track was the subject of an episode of the Song Exploder podcast released this week and has moved into the Top 5 in New Zealand.
#7: Drake ‘What’s Next’ – Drake hits this week’s chart with ‘What’s Next’ (#7), ‘Wants And Needs’ (#15), and ‘Lemon Pepper Freestyle’ (#26). All three tracks come from the EP Scary Hours 2. The follow-up to the 2018 EP Scary Hours was announced the day before its release and features appearances by Rick Ross and Lil Baby. 2020 saw the Canadian rap superstar score Top Ten hits with ‘Toosie Slide’ (#3 Apr. ’20) and ‘Laugh Now Cry Later’ (#3 Aug. ’20). Drake has now racked up 15 Top Ten singles in Australia.
#13: Silk Sonic ‘Leave The Door Open’ – American R&B stars Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak join forces as Silk Sonic, making their chart debut at #13 with ‘Leave The Door Open’. It’s the first single to come from the duo’s upcoming album, An Evening With Silk Sonic, which is expected later in the year. Mars last charted with ‘Finesse’ (#6 Feb. ’18).
#19: Justin Bieber ‘Hold On’ – Debuting at #19 with ‘Hold On’, Justin Bieber takes out his second new entry on the chart for 2021. The track is the fourth single from Bieber’s album Justice, which is set for release on 19 March. The album has already spawned the hits ‘Holy’ (#4 Sept. ’20), ‘Lonely’ (#11 Nov. ’20) and ‘Anyone’ (#5 Jan. ’21).

Albums Chartifacts:
#1: Kings Of Leon ‘When You See Yourself’ – Releasing their eighth album, When You See Yourself, Kings Of Leon grab their fourth #1 on the ARIA Charts. The follow-up to Walls (#3 Oct. ’16) also gives the American band their sixth Top Ten album in Australia. As well as on the traditional formats, When You See Yourself has been released as a non-fungible token (NFT), a type of cryptocurrency that contains unique assets such as music and art. Kings Of Leon previously topped the ARIA Albums Chart with Only By The Night (#1 Sept. ’08), Come Around Sundown (#1 Oct. ’10) and Mechanical Bull (#1 Sept. ’13).
#3: The Wiggles ‘We’re All Fruit Salad!: The Wiggles’ Greatest Hits’ – The Wiggles equal their highest ever ARIA Albums Chart entry as they debut at #3 with new compilation We’re All Fruit Salad!: The Wiggles’ Greatest Hits. Released to mark the ARIA Hall Of Fame members’ 30th anniversary, the album features 40 tracks featuring all the different line-ups of the group, plus new re-recorded versions of some of their classics. It equals the peak set by with Nursery Rhymes 2 (#3 Mar. ’18). The Wiggles have previously charted with compilations Hot Potatoes! The Best Of The Wiggles (#32 Mar. ’14) and The Best Of (#16 Jun. ’16).
Long time Wiggle Anthony Field said: “So excited to hear the extraordinary news about the chart success of our Greatest Hits. The album was 30 years in the making, I am so glad our music still resonates. We really are all fruit salad!”
#9: A Day To Remember ‘You’re Welcome’ – Debuting at #9, A Day To Remember return with their seventh album You’re Welcome. The American pop-punk/hardcore band’s first album in five years becomes their second Top Five on the ARIA Charts, having hit #1 with previous album Bad Vibrations (#1 Sept. ’16).
#11: The Smith Street Band ‘Unplugged In Wombat State Forest’ – Melbourne’s The Smith Street Band hit the chart at #11 with Unplugged In Wombat State Forest. It’s their third live release in 12 months, having also hit the chart with Live At The Triffid (#4 Mar. ’20), and Viva La Rev (#30 Nov. ’20). The group also scored their first #1 with Don’t Waste Your Anger (#1 Apr. ’20). Unplugged In Wombat State Forest is #1 on this week’s ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart.
#22: Pete Murray ‘The Night – EP’ – Pete Murray hits the Albums Chart for the first time since 2017 as he debuts at #22 with The Night EP. The first of a set of two EPs gives the ARIA Award-nominated singer-songwriter his seventh Top 50 entry and the first since Camacho (#3 Jun. ’17). Murray has scored #1s with Feeler (#1 Mar. ’04), See The Sun (#1 Oct. ’05) and Summer At Eureka (#1 May ’08).
#27: Genesis Owusu ‘Smiling With No Teeth’ – Canberra’s Genesis Owusu makes his ARIA Top 50 debut at #27 with Smiling With No Teeth. The singer-songwriter’s debut album comes four years on from his debut EP, Cardrive(2017) and a handful of singles. Owusu picked up ARIA Award nominations for Best Soul/R&B Release in both 2019 and 2020.
#39: DMA’s ‘Live From O2 Academy Brixton’ – DMA’s debut at #39 with the concert recording Live From O2 Academy Brixton. The album’s release coincides with the one-year anniversary of the band’s sold out show at the London venue on 6 March 2020. The Sydney trio’s third album The Glow (#2 Jul. ’20) was nominated for four ARIA Awards in 2020, including Album Of The Year.

Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
