Tour Dates

Melbourne   St. Peters Cathedral   17 – 25 November 2017.

In addition to the four previously announced shows in The Cathedral – with headline performances from DJ Hell, Julianna Barwick, Sampa The Greatand Jacques Greene – MMW will see the neo-gothic cathedral’s adjoining car park transformed into a bustling outdoor live music space. Featuring a huge line-up of local and international acts, ‘The Carpark’ will be home to lunchtime performances, live sets and incredible gigs co-presented with Melbourne music powerhouses I OH YOU, Complex, Valve Sounds, Analogue Attic, WAT Artists and more.

From old-time jazz and sleek pop-synth to sprawling electronica, there’s something for all music tastes. Opening night in The Carpark will kick-off on Friday 17 November with performances by Kutcha Edwards – the 2016 Melbourne Prize for Music and Awards recipient – as well as exciting new face of Australian hip hop, Miss BlanksSaturday 18 November will feature the epic folk pop of Forster native Jack River, the sleek synth-pop of I Know Leopard and the sprawling electronica of Melbourne’s Eilish Gilligan, for a night co-presented by I OH YOU.

The Carpark will also play host to Harry James Angus, the firebrand trumpet-playing vocalist from The Cat Empire, on Tuesday 21 November when he performs Struggle With Glory. Co-presented by Bennetts Lane, the night will transport the classical dramas of Greco-Roman myths into the surreal world of old-time jazz and gospel music. Valve Sounds and Complex then have punters covered on Wednesday 22 November, providing the dream team of Melbourne’s finest soul, R&B and hip-hop, with artists including Baro, Big Words, ESESE, Nasty Mars and Villette. The improvised nature of jazz and electronic themes are explored when Analogue Attic and WAT-artists combine, taking over The Carpark for the final night of MMW on Saturday 25 November with Barney McAll: Non Compliance Electric, Albrecht La’Brooy, Josh Kelly and Sleep D.

Anniversary and birthday celebrations will also take place in this newly created live music venue. Celebrating 60 years, VOX Amps deliver the iconic Kirin J Callinan, Sydney’s Body Type and Melbourne rock newcomers Press Club in a free event co-presented by Face The Music on Thursday 23 November. The following night, Melbourne collective The Operatives are celebrating their 13th birthday in style, treating audiences to a fusion of modern soul, jazz, house, trap and R&B with the Australian debut of Masego and support sets from Haiku Hands, Silentjay and The Bad Opera All Stars (Billy Davis, Blasko, Jordan Dennis and Tentendo).

This year, much-loved MMW staple Live Music Safari celebrates 40 years of punk. On Thursday 23 November, 10 of the city’s iconic live music venues will ditch the cover charge for a huge night of live music that nods to the rebellious, frank and fearless spirit of punk, with more than 50 artists performing across multiple genres for free.

Showcasing and supporting original, innovative music events by Melbourne’s emerging producers, MMW’s Self-Made series returns in 2017. A carefully curated program of eight unique and thought-provoking music experiences, audiences will be transported across a number of unconventional Melbourne locations including MPavilion, Melbourne Meat Market and Howey Place.

MMW will continue its long tradition of reinterpreting and re-purposing the city’s forgotten corners. MMW’s 2016 hub, the historic State Library Victoria, will open its doors once again with magical performances by Melbourne group The Orbweavers on Saturday 18 November, as well as leading guitarist Charlie Owen (New Christs, Tex, Don & Charlie, and Beasts of Bourbon) on Friday 24 November in The Dome. Rocking the steps of Melbourne’s Parliament House, Live At The Steps is back for another year with a massive free, all-ages party on Friday 17 November, featuring Skegss, Tired Lion, Mallrat and 2017 triple j unearthed winner Baker Boy.
