Writer, producer and composer Tourist announces his deeply personal fourth studio album Inside Out. The news comes with the release of the first single ‘Your Love’ released today, accompanied by the official video. The full project is out May 20 via the artists own imprint Monday Records, and available for pre-order both digitally and on vinyl. The album will be rolled out alongside a LANDMRK campaign*.
The first single to be taken from the ten-track album, ‘Your Love’ marks a confident return for the British producer after a two-year hiatus. The electronic beats seamlessly build with the ethereal vocals to create an atmospheric soundscape rooted equally in both euphoria and melancholia.
“This was one of those tracks I feel like I’ve been trying to write my entire life,” remarks the artist. Written in tribute to a dear friend who passed away, the track is a celebration of life and friendship. “I think the first time I heard it it made me cry. There was something very sincere about the sentiment of asserting a statement of love over and over on a dance track. In the end, It forms the centrepiece of the album, and is the one resounding sentiment I’d love people to take away from Inside Out.”
The video is accompanied by the profoundly transcendent official video directed by Duncan Loudon – who has worked with the likes of BADBADNOTGOOD, Skepta, Mount Kimbie – creating something that ultimately celebrates the sentiments Tourist was touching upon in the track. It is the perfect way to honour both the track and the people both artist and director lost: rooted in the love of the departed.

A poignant record written in response to the sudden loss of a close friend during the pandemic of 2020, the artist experienced the full range of emotions in his attempt to honour that person. “It was never a record I had imagined I would write, nor one I would want to again – but the process of creating these tracks was my attempt to make music that comforted me and explored the gamut of emotions one experiences after losing someone. Being unable to see others in the aftermath meant that writing music was a healthy way to occupy myself, and as soon as I felt like the record was in tribute to this person – the album really just wrote itself.”
In the absence of face to face collaboration, he found himself sampling more than ever across the spectrum of artists he admires – including Big Thief, Julianna Barwick, Penelope Trappes and Ellie Goulding, to older artists like The Mamas and the Papas, The Durutti Column and Shakespeare’s Sisters – and so the pandemic heralded a huge shift for the artist. With the state of his mind and the state of the world at the time of writing, the themes he explores lean towards the existential: loss, friendship, the ephemerality of everything, becoming a father, longing for the connection of other human beings. “Amongst all of this, it was still important to me that if someone listened to the music with no understanding of what the record is about – it might speak to them purely on a sonic and musical level. My aim wasn’t to write a murky, heavy album to express these themes, but one that felt both euphoric, celebratory and melancholic all at once.”
The moniker of William Phillips, after three EP’s and three albums, the record marks ten years of releasing music as Tourist. “Building this story has been the most enjoyable work of my life, and Inside Out is the culmination of all the lessons I’ve learnt over the last decade.” Remaining active as a remixer for artists like Chistine and The Queens, Wolf Alice, Deftones, CHVRCHES, Sophia Koutesis, Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd. He has recently sold out two nights at Village Underground in October 2021, previously played Coachella, supported Bonobo on tour, as well as scooping a Grammy for song of the year for his co-written track ‘Stay With Me’ by Sam Smith. A perennial source of purpose, inspiration and happiness since childhood, the artist was always destined to have a career influenced by music. “It brings me unending joy, as a listener and as an artist, it sparks my curiosity about our relationship with sounds, self expression and each other. When I view music as language, it strikes me as one of the most necessary and effective forms of communication humans have developed.” As he readies himself for a Rough Trade East show on May 20 as well as Field Day in the Summer, 2022 is the year Tourist traverses back onto the global stage.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
