You Be the Lightning is the fifth album for Melbourne-based Canadian ex-pat Tracy McNeil, and her band The GoodLife. Following a successful Pozible album campaign earlier this year, the critically-acclaimed Americana 5-piece will release their newest full length on February 14, 2020 through Cooking Vinyl Australia.

Featuring the recent single Stars, and the much-adored Not Like A Brother (an instant hit with music directors at ABC Local, Double J & ABC Country – and “one of the best ballads you’ll hear from anyone all year”Double J), You Be the Lightning once again highlights the songwriting brilliance of McNeil. Within the broad strokes of Americana music, Tracy McNeil & The GoodLife have refined their own palette, expanding on their distinctive alt-country roots, culminating in a body of work that many believe is the bands’ finest to date.

Ahead of the album release is the new single Catch You, an infectious Summer earworm and first release for Cooking Vinyl Australia.  Catch You is released Tuesday, November 12 2019. The signing to CVA sees McNeil join the likes of Lucinda Williams, John Prine and Patty Griffin through to Mia Dyson and Fanny Lumsden on the label.

As CVA’s Co-Managing Director Leigh Gruppetta states;  “Tracy is a fearless and prolific talent who has carved her own path for a number of years, so we’re honoured to now be part of the team.  “You Be the Lightning” is such a fine record; from the very first listen it was clear we had to be involved.”

On her signing to the label, Tracy says; “What an exciting time to be welcomed into the Cooking Vinyl family. It feels as though the stars have aligned, bringing in a compassionate new team of great people who believe in quality music. CVA have the expertise and industry savvy to help us reach new audiences as a band and allow me to push new boundaries as an artist. I’m thrilled to begin this new partnership.”

Catch You is available on all digital streaming platforms via Cooking Vinyl Australia Tuesday November 12, 2019.

You Be the Lightning is released February 14, 2020.   Pre-order here.

“CATCH YOU”

Searing guitar, Hammond organ on 10 and a swaggering back beat explode through the speakers and grab you by the scruff of the neck, holding you in a rock-driven pop-splendour grip for 3:52.

Co-produced by Dan Parsons and McNeil, the track pays homage to her Alt Country roots while flirting heavily with the unique pop sensibility she and her band The GoodLife have become known for. Recorded live off the floor at The Aviary Recording Studios and mixed by Alex O’Gorman, there is an electric energy to the performance that nearly bursts off the tape machine. McNeil’s vocals are raw, uncompromised and brimming with character. She is on a mission for the truth, fists up and ready for the fight…

Gonna break it all wide open
Gonna drown you out with wine
Gonna shake you in the hallway till you confess your crime
Gonna track you like a hound dog, drag you from the mud
You always thought the water was thicker than the blood
And I bet that I could catch you on the other side
I bet that I could catch you on the run
