shares significant survey stats

on young Australians

in the lead up

to the Federal Election

triple j’s recent What’s Up In Your World Survey canvassed the thoughts of 14,175 young Australian voters between the ages of 18-29 years and, more than ever, the findings are fascinating in the lead up to the Federal Election.

The AEC are also predicting that young voters could have a big impact on this election, after a whopping 132,000 first time voters registered to vote in the 2017 same sex marriage plebiscite. That’s a lot of young people who want to be heard, some for the very first time.

Importantly, young Aussies are engaged in the election, want a PM who has their back and are still undecided on who to vote for:

  • 68% of respondents expressed interest in federal politics and the upcoming election

  • 69% of respondents believe their vote counts, up significantly from 59% in our 2016 survey

  • 85% don’t believe that politicians are working in the best interests of young people

  • 89% of respondents don’t believe that politicians are working in the best interests of the planet

  • Over half of all respondents (51%) are still undecided on who they are going to vote for

  • 59% of those surveyed believe whoever is PM in 2019 won’t survive their full term anyway

.

In addition, the five things which are most important to them are:

  • Climate Change / Environment

  • Health

  • Mental Health

  • Education

  • Housing

.

Now, in the lead up to the election, triple j’s Hack program will hit the streets to speak to young voters about the issues that will swing their vote in the Hack Swinging Voters Tour. So far we’ve talked climate change in Townsville. Next we’re off to Coffs Harbour, Adelaide, Wollongong and Hobart to tackle unemployment, mental health, education and housing.
