“One of the most capable and forward-thinking acts to keep an eye on” – NOISEY
Ukiyo has crafted something quite personal and reflective, bringing together these haunting vocals with a soft, piano-backed instrumental that you can just picture playing out on a cold winter’s day – Pile Rats
“ [Ukiyo] has given us a new reason to stay on the web a little bit longer” – NYLON21-year-old multi-instrumentalist Ukiyo ( aka Timothy Arnott) goes from strength to strength in the majestic offering ‘Go’– Acid Stag

The inventive 21 year old multi-instrumentalist and producer, Ukiyo returns today with a bubbling new single Clicky, an eccentric instrumental track that percolates with intricate percussion, out June 27. Clicky is the latest taste of Ukiyo’s much anticipated EP entitled Fantasy, a heady collection of distinctive production moments, featuring instrumental tracks and exceptional collaborations with vocalists Chymes and Feelds, set for release on July 25. The Perth local has also announced a very special gig at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne on July 1, supporting American artist Quinn XCII.
Clicky is playful and captivatingly peculiar, undeniable in its bouncy hooks and curious harmony. It’s impossible not to tap along to this one, as each layer dips and weaves amongst themselves, creating a perfectly balanced amalgamation of different sound.
Ukiyo has a soft spot for this uber cool track, saying, “Instrumentals have a special place in my heart, definitely stemming from my love of soundtracks…I started and basically finished Clicky in one hot Aussie summer day. The track started with all the percussion stuff which is why it got that name – most of my tracks start with a silly name like that, but somehow this one stuck. I recorded the synth stuff live and really liked how out of time it was so I kept them like that and kind of warped the rest of the track to be in time with these synth stabs instead of the other way round.”
Fantasy has been a long time coming for Ukiyo, who is all about the journey that comes with songs that are supposed to be listened to together. The EP demonstrates the producer’s versatility in every sense of the word, and his true understanding of layering melodic, harmonic, and percussive information in a way that is completely unique and often quite meditative. Previous single Go, featuring the gliding vocals of Chymes exudes rare charm and maintains strong pop sensibilities. Something Like This, featuring FEELDS, draws upon Flume and Chet Faker vibes, while instrumentals Drive, Life and Lonesome feel modern and new, while still oozing that cool magnetism that is characteristic of everything Ukiyo produces.
Reflecting on the collection of songs that makes up Fantasy, Ukiyo says, “This EP and the Ukiyo project in general are both all about escapism. It’s why I started making music in the first place after all. I’ll never stop being amazed by the ability soundtracks have to take listeners to another world and it’s my goal to create music that does that. My EP is called Fantasy because that’s exactly what it is to me, when I close my eyes this is the music I hear.”
Now a common name to many through his appearances at major festival Groovin’ The Moo and over 9.5 million Spotify streams to date, Ukiyo is only just getting started. Set to support indie pop artist from America, Quinn XCII at Melbourne’s renowned Corner Hotel on July 1, Ukiyo gives a taste of what to expect for what’s to come after the release of Fantasy, as he hints,
“I’ve got a huge backlog of music now, I think the next step is going to be an album. Most of it is instrumentals at the moment so I’m on the hunt for some interesting vocalists to work with. We’ll see. An album is a huge deal to me so it’d have to be perfect. I make a lot of my tracks pretty fast and there’s definitely a few whacky ones, it’s going to require a bit of a brainstorm to work out the best way to do them justice.”
