Following on from their critically acclaimed 2017 record ‘Staring At You Staring At Me’, Melbourne cult favourites Underground Lovers released their new single ‘The Passer-by’ – on MAY 24. This was the first track from the band’s upcoming tenth studio album; A Left Turn which is due out later this year.

It’s been a busy two years for the Underground Lovers since the release of ‘Staring At You Staring At Me’ with the album honoured as Double J’s Feature album and longlisted for the Australian Music Prize. The Herald Sun also sung the bands praises saying “27 years after they formed, and a few years after reuniting for a strong second wind, they’re still in love with making classy, experimental pop.”

Soon after the band’s last tour promoting Staring At You Staring At Me, pre-production for A Left Turn began in the small Carlton studio set up by guitarist Glenn Bennie. The band worked on demos of the songs throughout 2018, before taking the tracks to Hercules Street Studios in Sydney to collaborate with esteemed Australian producer, Wayne Connolly.

Recorded in late 2018 and early 2019, the album is a further development of themes and song structures that the band’s principal songwriters Glenn Bennie and Vincent Giarrusso have explored over their career. A beguiling set of songs that cover the gamut of human emotions from nostalgic lust, to deep disgust with late-stage capitalism.

Debut single ‘The Passer-by’ features the lush vocals of the band’s own Philippa Nihill, as she explores being anonymous in the Undie’s beloved hometown of Melbourne – “in love and in camouflage, keeping up the charade with an alibi”.

Set for release through long-time label partner Rubber Records, ‘The Passer-by’ is available digitally NOW.

With no signs of wavering, Underground Lovers continue to produce effortless and rich melodic music with alt-rock swagger.
