Genre-blurring singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Cautious Clay – aka Joshua Karpeh – releases his deeply conceptual and sonically rich new album The Hours: Morning via Concord Records.

Anchored in mood, meaning, and meticulous craftsmanship, the project arrives with  focus track ‘Promises (9am)’, which is accompanied by a mesmerising visualizer – watch here. The song – nearly a decade in the making – has evolved through over 80 versions since 2017, standing as a testament to Cautious’ perfectionism and patience as a songwriter.

The album follows a string of acclaimed singles includingFather Time (10am),” “Tokyo Lift (5am),” andNo Champagne (6am)which have earned press praise from Hypebeast, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vibe and more.

Cautious Clay ushers in a new phase with The Hours: Morning, a conceptual eight-track project that’s equal parts mixtape and emotive timetable, exploring the feeling, colour, and emotional landscape of each morning hour.

Beyond his own artistry, Cautious has established himself as a highly sought-after songwriter and producer, collaborating with Billie Eilish, John Mayer, John Legend, Khalid, Kavinsky, Melanie Martinez, Remi Wolf, and most recently, Tycho.

The project was conceived after Cautious Clay relocated from New York to Philadelphia, prompting a creative shift that would inform the tone, pacing, and structure of The Hours: Morning. There, in a new environment, he carved out daily rituals and leaned into a more fluid, intuitive creative process – one that allows this project to live between the precision of pop, the fluidity of jazz, the texture of indie rock, and the vulnerability of alt-R&B.

“I wanted to create something that felt like a reflection of what mornings are emotionally – how they can be quiet, restless, hopeful, even tense,” says Karpeh. “Each track is a snapshot of a different feeling I’ve experienced during those early hours, and I built the project to flow with the rhythm of the morning itself.”

The Hours: Morning follows Cautious’ 2023 full-length KARPEH, an autobiographical jazz-influenced record that explored heritage, family, and identity, earning widespread acclaim and further cementing his place as one of today’s most dynamic voices in independent music.

His 2021 debut album Deadpan Love received glowing reviews from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Fader, PAPER, and others, praised for its nuanced, soulful exploration of emotional complexity and modern connection. His earlier EPs Resonance and Table of Context helped launch his reputation as a thoughtful and forward-thinking artist, always balancing introspection with innovation.

Now, with The Hours: Morning, Cautious Clay continues to evolve – blurring genre lines while deepening his artistic identity. It’s a confident, exploratory project that captures the subtle transitions of the early day, while also signalling a new dawn in his own musical journey.

From the quiet stirrings of dawn to the charged energy of mid-morning, The Hours: Morning isn’t just a record – it’s a ritual.
