Groundbreaking singer-songwriter Wafia has unveiled her intoxicating new single and companion video. “Flowers and Superpowers is available today via Atlantic Records HERE; a dramy and kaleidoscopic companion video – directed by filmmaker/photographer Alexandra Gavillet – is streaming HERE.

Produced by GRAMMY® Award-nominee Rogét Chahayed (Travis Scott, DRAM, Louis the Child) and GRAMMY® Award-winner Hit-Boy (Travis Scott, Beyoncé, Jay-Z & Kanye West), Flowers and Superpowers was co-written by Wafia and Wrabel, with whom she previously collaborated on the 2018 hit, “I’m Good.”

“’Flowers and Superpowers’ was inspired by a night where I got a little too high off edibles and was the worst/most paranoid/talkative version of myself,” says Wafia. The whole time I was thinking if the person I was with would still love me after this embarrassment of a night but they were nothing but loving, kind and caring as they helped bring me back down. This song came together so quickly with Rogét and Wrabel and I’m beyond honored to have a legend like Hit-Boy on it too.”

“Working with Alexandra on the video was just incredible,” she adds. “I’d been following her work for a long time and to see her treatment, references and mood boards be so similar to mine confirmed to me that this video was in the perfect hands. I’m so proud of what we’ve made!”

“Flowers and Superpowers marks Wafia’s debut on the newly minted Rodeo Records. Producer John Hill (Santigold to Shakira / Rihanna to tUnE-yArDs / Phantogram to Portugal. The Man / Khalid to Cage the Elephant to Sturgill Simpson) started Rodeo Records as a means to share and promote artists that inspire him with the world.

“The thing I enjoy most about working with artists is helping them tell their unique stories in ways that connect with their fans and excite and inspire new ones,” says Hill, I started Rodeo as a music first label to work with artists that inspire me as people, whose work ethic makes me work harder, and whose art is a reminder of why I do this in the first place. Our first signing, Wafia, is all these things and I can’t wait for people to hear her story.”

On Rodeo Records partnership with Atlantic Records, John muses:  “Some of my favorite people work at Atlantic.  I’ve watched them nurture and develop artists into global superstars on their own terms and couldn’t be more excited to have them as my partner and in my artist’s corner”.

In terms of a vision for the label, Hill says, “I’d like to encourage artists to be themselves.  There is no point in asking people to be something they are not.  If that means we’re not the right place for an artist that we love, so be it, we can always be fans.  If that vision means that I’m not the right producer for one of our artists, that’s cool too – there are so many producers, writers and musicians that excite me right now that I would love to have work with our artists. Ideally, I’d like to have a home where my favorite artists, songwriters, musicians, and producers can collaborate across each other’s projects in as free a way as possible so we can make music that otherwise wouldn’t exist.”

ABOUT WAFIA

Hailed by VOGUE as “the 24-year-old, Muslim, Iraqi-Syrian, queer artist that is single handedly shaking up the music industry with her ‘purposeful pop,’” Wafia has made waves for magnifying identifiable and idiosyncratic experiences in the form of alternative electro anthems rich with keen observation and lyrical power. She first arrived with an initial series of independent releases and collaborations but truly captured the world’s attention with her featured role on Louis the Child’s 2018 smash, “Better Not (Feat. Wafia).” The US RIAA Gold certified track earned worldwide streams in excess of 200 million along with widespread acclaim from the likes of W, Idolator, Ladygunn, NPR, Wonderland, i-D, and more.

Now based in Los Angeles, after growing up in Australia, Wafia quickly followed up with her own “I’m Good,” drawing millions of worldwide streams as well as further applause from The FADER, which wrote,“Produced by John Hill and co-written with Wrabel, (‘I’m Good’ is) built around a pulsing beat and shimmery instrumentation that, together, sound like a moment of self-confident clarity.” “I’m Good” is “a perfect song,” declared Refinery 29. “The groove…is truly second to none, and paired with (Wafia’s) airy vocals, it makes for a next level conception on a classic genre of song.”

Flowers and Superpowers” follows Wafia’s recently released Atlantic Records debut single, “Hurts (Feat. Louis the Child & Whethan)”. The bouncy, euphoric track is joined by a stunning companion video, directed by Chicago-based filmmaker collective, Weird Life Films  (Laura Gordon, Mike Monachos, Ryan Ohm and Jackson James). The track drew applause from such high-profile media outlets as Billboard, which declared it “a fresh pop tune,” adding, “’Hurts’ puts Wafia’s sweetheart vocals over a thumping bass beat, shimmering R&B textures and a woobly hook.”

With over 300 million worldwide streams to her name thus far, Wafia is keenly aware of her position in life and is committed to empowering marginalized communities, at home and abroad, while also helping women of all shapes, sizes, and nationalities find themselves in her music. Though her unique art is distinctly personal, Wafia firmly believes creative gifts are meant to be shared and is passionately determined to create a positive environment that says all are welcome here.

Wafia – who is currently hard at work recording her long-awaited debut album, due next year – will join Electric Guest on select dates of the first leg of their upcoming KIN World Tour this October/November, before retuning home to Australia for a strong of headline shows in January 2020. See tour dates below.
