Warren Ellis, leader of legendary Australian post-rock group Dirty Three and long-standing key creative force in Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, will join Double J’s Zan Rowe for a very special Take 5 LIVE at Hobart’s Dark Mofo festival this June.

Double J’s Take 5 is one of the most loved Australian radio segments and most popular music podcasts. The idea is simple: the people you love play five songs they love, and tell you why. Each Take 5 has a different theme, and over the last 13 years everyone from Paul McCartney, David Byrne and Brian Eno, to Christine & the QueensTom Waits and Neneh Cherry, to Mike D, Beck, Joan Jett and Ice Cube have taken part.

Now, in arguably one of the most exciting Take 5s yet, Warren Ellis’ theme is “Songs in the Key of Waz”. Quite simply, five songs from other artists that have shaped his life and career. He’s a fascinating character whose wry observations on life and art have kept us entertained for decades, and this is an incredible opportunity to get inside the mind of one of our country’s most revered musicians. With a pro like Zan Rowe asking the questions, we can’t wait to see where this conversation goes.

Thrilled to grill one of her musical heroes, Zan Rowe says “I still remember the first time I heard Dirty Three; it had an anarchic, beautiful edge to it that made me fall in love immediately. Warren Ellis has sound tracked my life, shaped the sound of Australian music, and delivered some of the most visceral live performances I have ever witnessed. Whether conducting the heavens centre stage in Dirty Three or driving the beauty and fury in the Bad Seeds and Grinderman, he’s forever been a compelling force. I can’t wait to peel back the layers of his musical heart”.

Want to WIN tickets? In the spirit of the festival and much of Warren’s music, tell us in 25 words or less: What is your favourite dark song, and why?

If you can’t be there, you can hear the whole thing on Double J and the Take 5 Podcast the following week.
