‘Dreaming”s driving guitar lines underpin some of the Australian producer’s most vulnerable lyrics to date, ruminating on those stubborn post-breakup emotions: “You feel jealousy, anger, lust, and contempt all at once, and you’d much rather put your mind to better use. But for some reason you simply can’t.”

Wave Racer has faced a lot of challenges on the way here, on the loooong journey toward this eagerly anticipated debut…

You might have already seen his joyous Like A Version where he played The 1975’s ‘It’s Not Living If It’s Not With You‘ alongside his playful, uplifting latest single ‘Look Up To Yourself’, which premiered on triple j Good Nights and has had a bunch of airplay with the station.

On his debut album, Tom Purcell combats his anxieties with self-described ‘corny but helpful’ advice, transformed into intriguing, playful pop, and is a message to anyone who, like Wave Racer himself who battled anxiety and depression exacerbated by his meteoric rise to notoriety.

Across eleven tracks, To Stop From Falling Off The Earth blends together the rush of his trademark glistening, ecstatic production with his love of quirk-driven pop and, in a first, Tom’s own voice, to tell a story of overcoming anxiety, depression, and isolation. His tongue-in-cheek sensibilities keeps Wave Racer’s trademark bubbliness in the mix, even as the album tackles bigger demons.

The album was actually almost called Taping Myself To The Floor To Stop From Falling Off The Earth which should give you a bit of an idea of the massive mental health journey he’s been on – from “flailing around… directionless” to now using his debut album to remind himself – and others – of the things that you can do to ground yourself, things that have happened to Wavey and have helped him personally.

Tom reveals more of himself than ever before on To Stop From Falling Off The Earth. The result is vulnerable, self-deprecating pop layered deeply with electronic embarkations; equal parts playful and introspective, light and dark, and an assured re-introduction to the juggernaut talent that is Wave Racer.

Almost since the genesis of his career, Wave Racer had been considered a leading producer of ‘future bass’, an electronica genre trading in nostalgia, 808s and twinkling, hyper-speed beats.

Following the release of his critically acclaimed EP Flash Drive in 2015, Wave Racer began to slowly dip off from public presence throughout late 2016. Moving to a new city (Melbourne) after years of touring and the external expectations of new music left Tom in a strange mental and emotional place – feelings of intense anxiety that seemed insurmountable.

Now having faced his demons, Wave Racer is drawing back the curtain on a new era and new sound, with his forthcoming full-length debut inspired by The 1975’s artful balance of irony, sincerity and observational story-telling. 

The release follows previous singles ‘Look Up To Yourself‘, ‘What Are We Waiting For?‘ & ‘Left Behind‘, the former securing rotation with FBi Radio and Soundcloud Radio, with support rolling in from American Songwriter, Acid Stag, The Line of Best Fit, Dancing Astronaut, PAPER Mag, The Guardian, NME AU, EDM.com and more including DSP adds to Spotify’s Monday Spin & Apple Music’s New In Indie AU. 

To Stop From Falling Off The Earth follows Wave Racer’s stint as the only Australian artist on Porter Robinson’s Secret Sky Digital Festival in April, and Porter’s far from the only huge Wavey fan out there – Purcell also counts Marc Rebillet, Kenny Beats, Flume and Skrillex amongst his fans.
