Fully immersed in rehearsal for his forthcoming massive national tour and international tour [18 countries] singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd releases his tenth studio album Jan Juc Moon, out 25th March via Salt.X Records and Virgin Australia.
The wind blows strong through Jan Juc Moon, it’s a recurring image that speaks of wide-open space and the awesome natural elements that shape it; a force greater than us, but ours to harness if we take the time to learn, reflect and respect its ways.
“I Am Eagle” a song that soars is the album’s focus track. A collaboration with the Slabb Brothers, Josh and Kyle, from Bundjalung nation in Fingal NSW the song is written from the perspective of an eagle. It speaks of what an eagle can do that man cannot, and in the second verse of what it can’t do including the reversing of the damage humans have done to the Earth. ”Josh sent me their song Mibbin, a sea-eagle song and it was crazy. It almost fit perfectly. They came to the studio; we sang it in a slightly different key and it was almost made for it.”
Title track “Jan Juc Moon” was written ten years ago at a difficult time in Rudd’s life. “At the start of Jan Juc Moon what you hear is my son’s heartbeat in the womb; my one year old, Jundi. I recorded his heartbeat and that runs right through the song so it’s kind of like a full circle. That’s why I called this record Jan Juc Moon. To me if feels like a bit of a follow up to “Spirit Bird” in some way”, says Xavier Rudd.

The album’s initial single “Stoney Creek” instantly re-connected Rudd’s global fan base. Followed by “We Deserve to Dream” last September and last month’s “Ball and Chain [Feat J-MILLA] these three preceding tracks have accrued over 12M global streams and continue to gain momentum. ““Ball and Chain” basically relates to our plight in society. Depending on our ball and chain, depending on what we’re dragging, what our history is, what our bloodlines are, where we’ve come up from…this is what we carry. I was weighing my options for who to get on it and there was this song by J-MILLA that really touched me,” My People”. So I invited him up”.
“It hit me last year when I started to write Stoney Creek”, the Australian roots troubadour says of the album’s first exhilarating single, a rolling acoustic balm of a song that finds refuge in the simple blessings of life in a world gone crazy. “ We were on a trip to the Cape and the wind was blowing too hard to take the tinnie out to the island…As I contemplated everything in my life and what was happening in the world there was a strong south-easter blowing, all the time. It felt like a wind of change, literally, in so many ways.”
The wide-open space Xavier found himself during this album’s creative process somehow intersected with the great COVID silence – both beyond his control and curiously in-sync. “I’d planned to take a year off anyway, the first time in 20 years I hadn’t done an overseas circuit,” he says. “I had a chance to reset and change a few things around, to reassess where I was at, musically and practically. I’ve been able to experiment with some new ideas and new sounds…”
“Dawn to Dusk” for me is probably the most special song on the album. My nephew came up to our place and he’d just lost one of his friends, by his own hand. Fifteen years old. Abe…a Yamatji kid raised on Wadawurrung country. It was so sad. Left a huge hole in that family. It really moved me, I was working on that song and it sorta took shape after that and I dedicated it to his memory, with his parents’ permission. So it touches on that tragedy of youth suicide; the feeling of falling and there’s no one to catch you.”

“I feel like with this record, I’ve been able to be really creative and I was excited about what I was making just because I had the time,” Xavier says.. “I’ve had the chance to do it all myself, which I haven’t done since Spirit Bird in terms of instrumentation and stuff, so I’ve been getting a bit trippy with an analog synthesizer…”
“When I first got successful I was surprised, because I thought what I was doing was more like art,” he says. “I was experimenting with didges and gaffa-taping them to chairs and I always had this real love for wood and the tones of wood, so it was all very earthy.”
“I’ve been doing this long enough to realise that for some people, what I’m saying in my music really resonates,” he says. “You know, all of our ancestors around the planet have come from some form of struggle and we carry that, all of us, years on. We’ve got stuff to heal. And I think music is the greatest medicine on the planet.”
Last night – on March 24th Xavier performed from home an online “live” concert streamed in real time via a world-wide exclusive on eMusic-live. Featuring songs from his back catalogue and a selection of tracks from Jan Juc Moon, Xavier welcomed fans into his inner sanctum for what was a captivating experience for both the artist and his fans.
Xavier’s return to the touring circuit is set to re-ignite his fan base. Currently he has sold-out shows with second shows announced for Belgium, Antwerp and Brussels. Both national and international ticket sales are strong and position him as one of this country’s most successful long term international acts.

About XAVIER RUDD:
Acoustic guitar in hand, engulfed by an ever more complex scaffold of didgeridoos, percussion and various eclectic instruments, Xavier cut an utterly unique and compelling figure as the world warmed to his first indie albums of the early 2000s, Live In Canada, To Let and Solace.
“When I first got successful, I was surprised, because I thought what I was doing was more like art,” he says. “I was experimenting with didges and gaffa-taping them to chairs and I always had this real love for wood and the tones of wood, so it was all very earthy.”
In the studio, his instinctive beginnings would gradually yield the more purposeful and crafted likes of Spirit Bird, Nanna (with 9-piece band the United Nations) and Storm Boy. His seven official live albums are eclipsed by countless bootlegs swapped by fans from Argentina to the Czech Republic, serving to double his audience on each return.
Today, Xavier’s relentless upward arc is among the most astounding success stories of our time. Over 20 years of touring, his Canadian shows have grown to 2500 capacity halls; in the USA to 10,000, including a sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheatre in 2018. Through Europe, he plays to 2000-6000 fans per show. From the Netherlands to Japan, he regularly commands festival crowds in their tens of thousands.
Countless more celebrated acts have come and gone like fireworks as his campfire steadily grows: a beacon to the kind of music fan that seeks sustenance in a fast-food world.
“I value the simple things in life,” he shrugs. “I value community, culture, our connection to the earth as human beings. I don’t care too much for the other stuff. I think the roots of who we are, and what our ancestral lines are and how those stories have shaped us are the most important things. And I guess I always celebrate those things in my music.”
“I’ve been this long enough to realise that for some people, what I’m saying in my music really resonates,” he says. “You know, all of our ancestors around the planet have come from some form of struggle and we carry that, all of us, years on. We’ve all got stuff to heal. And I think music is the greatest medicine on the planet.”

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
