Sydney pop-punkers Yours Truly today reveal their hotly anticipated EP, Afterglow, an honest and infectious five track offering. With over five million streams already under their belt following previous singles ‘High Hopes’, ‘Circles’ and ‘I Can’t Feel’ alongside rave reviews and coveted triple j play, the reveal of the entire EP is sure to intensify the critical and fan rapture surrounding the four-piece.

If their 2017 debut EP Too Late For Apologies wasn’t statement of their formidable force enough, Afterglow solidifies Yours Truly’s knack for compelling songwriting. Examining relationship struggles, personal battles with chronic illness and societal attitudes, the EP not only serves up delicious pop-punk hooks and soaring vocals, but shines a light on some of the most intimate corners of the band’s life.

Unpacking the details behind each track, lead singer Mikaila Delgado reveals that the title track is about being emotionally unavailable in a relationship, and that critical moment when you end up feeling like it can’t be sustained long term. ‘Circles’ and ‘Delusional Paradise’ ramp up the attitude as they discuss discrimination and having to fight to prove oneself. On ‘Circles’, Delgado explains:

“This song is an open letter to men who don’t treat women as equal or think they’re superior to us just because of their gender, and how there is a constant need to prove ourselves as strong to be taken seriously in our chosen professions.”

“I want this to be empowering for women or anyone who is discriminated against because of who they are,” she adds. “In a time of change there are always a group of people who are against it… this is an anthem of women saying that ‘we’re not gonna get over it’.”

Meanwhile she explains that ‘Delusional Paradise’ – which features guest vocals from Between You And Me’s Jake Wilson – is a “big F You” to the people that didn’t believe in the band or put them down. But perhaps the most emotionally-charged output on the EP comes in the form of recently released single ‘I Can’t Feel’ – an incredibly vulnerable look inside Delgado’s battle with a chronic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

“‘I Can’t Feel’ is about the struggles where you’re doubting yourself because of a condition you can’t control. Since EDS is an invisible disability, I sometimes have a feeling of having to prove my pain and discomfort for it to be legitimate to other people,” she explains. “This song is really special to me because I’ve always found it hard to explain the way I feel – what other people can’t see. Putting it in a song allowed me to say the things I’ve wanted to say for the past 21 years.”

Last week Yours Truly co-headlined the inaugural Sydney-based pop-punk fiesta UsFest, and upon the release of Afterglow are set to support Hellions on their Australian national tour, as well as play Download UK in June.

Yours Truly is Mikaila Delgado (vocals), Teddie Haron (guitar), Lachlan Cronin (guitar) and Bradley Cronan (drums).
