HOW CAN YOU SAY YOU LOVE YOURSELF
WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO
SCREAM

Having previously released two delightfully cacophonous singles in Don Wowry and Artshole, Melbourne’s blyolk aka Bastian Chesney is picking up the baton for weird-pop once more with Shun The Sun Because I Don’t Breathe Youthout Friday 16 June. blyolk is also announcing two July Brisbane show dates that will follow on from his current month-long residency at Melbourne’s iconic Evelyn Hotel.

Dubbed “straight fire” (Bridget Hustwaite) following its first play on triple j Unearthed’s TOPS last night, Shun The Sun sees Chesney’s vocals seethe with restrained tension over a gargantuan alt-electro/RnB-influenced beat. The track travels between the perspectives of someone who’s left an abusive relationship, and those looking out for them. Building to a frenzied apex, Shun The Sun ultimately celebrates a reclamation of agency (If you base your worth on someone else/isn’t it hard to). Having originally started out as a lo-fi shoegazey demo akin to a Ty Segall release, the single’s ascendant final form is a credit to Chesney’s elastic nature as an artist.

blyolk’s decidedly strange but undeniably voracious music is built on a foundation of self-created loops, samples and a penchant for stark dichotomies. His distinctive style and eccentricities have earned him the attention of media, industry and fellow musicians alike.

Currently, in the midst of his curated residency at the Evelyn HotelA blyolk’s Life has already featured the likes of Slowcoaching, POPPONGENE, Shouse (DJs) and Bridget Hustwaite (DJ). blyolk will officially launch Shun The Sun on its final date of Wednesday 28 June, with Pikachunes, Cool Explosions, Peachnoise and more. Bringing his electrifying live show back to Brisbane for two dates in early July, blyolk will first be joined by a multitude of local acts and guests on and offstage at Woolly Mammoth Upstairs’ Mammoth Haus, including Spirit Bunny and Low Dive. He’ll then appear at New Farm Records Dependents Day Prom at Bloodhound Bar, alongside entertainment from Requin, Spare Time DJs, and even “intermission karaoke” from FeelsClub‘s magnetic frontman St Jonnie.

With the year continuing to roar along like a freight train, blyolk is matching its pace post for post, building not just a musical narrative but an increasingly titillating universe for listeners to lose themselves in.

2017 is the year we enter a blyolk’s life.
