Music Victoria is thrilled to recognise Victoria’s leading music municipalities with the release of its inaugural Top 10 Victorian Councils for Music list.

Music Victoria acknowledges the effort of these councils, in particular the top-ranked metro and regional councils, the City of Melbourne and the City of Ballarat, in striving to ensure that live music and the arts is well-represented in their area.

The criteria for selecting leading music councils includes (but is not limited to):

– Leading the way in developing and implementing strategic plans for contemporary music in their community.

– Providing grants and other programs for contemporary music.

– Curating, supporting and funding local music festivals.

– Offering use of council facilities for local musicians.

Involvement in, and contribution to, the Victorian music community.

Music Victoria chair Tim Northeast said:

Congratulations to the seven metropolitan and three regional councils that have made the inaugural list. We look forward to working with councils to help deliver more music strategies and new councils making the list in the near future.”

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the City of Melbourne was a long-standing supporter of Melbourne’s vibrant music industry.

We are one of the world’s top music cities: it’s great that Music Victoria has recognised our significant contribution to music,” the Lord Mayor said.

We provide ongoing support to the music community through a variety of grants, events such as Melbourne Music Week and our support for buskers. Our Melbourne Music Strategy 2014-17 promotes all elements of the city’s music industry from venues and musicians to audiences, educators and producers; making an enormous economic contribution to the city by boosting tourism and attracting visitors.”

Samantha McIntosh Mayor for the City of Ballarat is delighted to be acknowledged as one of the top ranked councils.

“As Mayor, I am thrilled Ballarat has been selected as the number one regional Council in Victorian for Music.

The City of Ballarat is a long and proud supporter of the live music scene in our region and across the state, and has been working hard to ensure our city is a sustainable and innovative creative hub via initiatives such as our Live Music Strategy 2016-2021.

Council looks forward to seeing this dynamic sector continue to flourish.”

In 2016 Music Victoria surveyed 2,000 candidates in 79 municipalities asking them to commit to undertaking an audit and strategy of their music community. Of those candidates, 85% committed to supporting a music strategy in their municipality.  51% believe that funding is currently not adequate for music in their municipality and 97% of those candidates agree they would support an increase in funding. Likewise, 98% of candidates have pledged support for increased use of council facilities and buildings in which music events can be held.
