Earlier today, while I was dozing off at work, Christian Zucconi, one half of Grouplove’s vocals, was shaving his head. Always expect the unusual when it comes to Grouplove. The stage is mostly hidden by the mood lighting, bar the fabric hands hanging across the back of the scene. Not only do they resemble their most recent album cover, but of course they glow in dark. What else would you predict from a band that refuses to stop shining.

After much anticipation, the band members grace the stage, wearing matching trench coats. I never knew trench coats could be so glamourous. Underneath Hannah Cooper is wearing a skin tight body suit. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wear anything other than a body suit. The trench coats only lasted a handful of songs (they blamed the Australian heat) only to reveal that they were donning matching black lace outfits underneath. There’s no resting when it comes to the details with this band.

The night opens with “Itchin’ On A Photograph” and it becomes apparent that no audience member will get away with snoozing during this dance fest. I didn’t realise how many Grouplove lyrics I knew, nor did I realise they had such a strong and dedicated fanbase.

Grouplove provide a ridiculous amount of energy. They bring down the levels, ever so slightly, to encourage their audience to be creative. There is no doubt that the band is thankful and humble for the life that they get to live. The bands voice, Christian and Hannah are probably my favourite married couple. I am already the number one fan of whatever music their daughter ends up releasing one day. She’s currently two years old so I’ve got a while to wait.

They gift us with ‘Naked Kids’, a song that they don’t play too often. It’s clear that it’s a party favourite. The crowd has a sense of unity that I haven’t seen at a gig for a while. Hannah hands the audience her microphone to pass around, trusting them with her gear. Grouplove display a perfect mix of theatricality and authenticity throughout the night.

For lack of better words, Grouplove hit us with banger after banger. I think about seven times throughout the night I thought to myself; ‘this must be their last song, there’s no way that they can top this’. I was gladly proved wrong.
