Project Description

Interview with

JoLivi

An accomplished songstress, Hawaiian-born JoLivi is no stranger to the pop music scene. However, you can’t say the same for country music. The simplicity of finding a country song as part of her cover repertoire sparked the shift. So, during rehearsals JoLivi would often speak to her producer about one day writing country music together – the result was the single Take A Shot that was then followed up by the more recent track in Crooked Crown.

JoLivi recently had a chat with AMNplify about all of this and more. Check it out below!

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

My grandfather has always been my inspiration to pursue music. He was a beautiful Hawaiian singer and his love for music is a part of me.

How would you best describe your sound?

Soulful pop country.

Who are your main musical influences?

My all-time musical influence is James Taylor. Even as a little kid, my mum would play all of his albums and I loved the way he told his stories through song. I also love Bonnie Raitt, Sara Bareilles, Maren Morris and Kris Kristofferson.

What is the inspiration behind Crooked Crown?

I wanted to write a song about embracing your flaws and realising that you are stronger even when the worst is thrown your way. Just dust yourself off and keep going…and don’t forget to fix your crown!

How does the new single differ to what you’ve released previously?

The beat hits a little harder on this track, with the lyrics being about picking yourself up even when you fall… I really wanted to give it that edge.

What inspires your songwriting?

Experiences; the moments that happen throughout my life: falling in love, heartbreak, death, life, etc.

What makes you different to similar sounding artists?

I think what makes me unique is being raised in Hawaii. I grew up on the lap steel guitar, but it was played with island vibes. I think that soulful side of my voice is from my heritage.

What has been your most memorable career highlight to date?

I got to open for Gavin DeGraw and Andy Grammer in front of 7000 people! It was absolutely amazing. I hope to go on tour soon.

What is something you want to achieve career-wise that you haven’t done yet?

Have my song featured on CMT (Country Music Channel)!

If you could play any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

That’s easy! Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado. It’s absolutely breathtaking. I went to college at Colorado State University, so I’ve seen my fair share of concerts at this venue. It’s a dream!
