Brace yourselves Australia. US metal mainstays, Miss May I have touched down in Australia and just wrapped up their first show of their Australian tour at The Triffid in Brisbane. Miss May I brought along As Paradise FallsJustice for the Damned , and Sylar, and quite frankly I can say Shadows Inside is to be one of the best heavy tours of 2017 for Australia.

A staple of the global metal circuit since their formation in 2007, Miss May I have gone from strength to strength throughout their decade-long career, with their 2015 effort, Deathless, peaking at #5 on the US rock charts.

Shadows Inside is the group’s latest release, one that signals a separation from long-time label Rise in favour of the upstart SharpTone Records, the latest venture from Nuclear Blast CEO Markus Staiger and former VP of Sumerian Records, Shawn Keith. Described by the band themselves as a monster riff-fest and forcefully vocal driven, Shadows Inside is the Ohio-based outfit’s most challenging body of work to date, an album that is as raw, authentic and vital as anything else the genre has offered up this year.

The night began early when doors opened up at 7:00pm. The opening supports were As Paradise Falls, and, Justice for the Damned. Followed by Sylar.

Signed to esteemed record label Hopeless Records, one of the support of the evening were eclectic New York quartet, Sylar. I’ve previously seen Sylar play on Vans Warped Tour  this past July and their sets sure did pack a punch; so I was more than eager to get down early to catch their set.

Branded as nu metal revivalists, Sylar’s sound is a layered and genre traversing affair that brandishes its love of hip hop, hard rock, electronica and metal proudly (Think Hollywood Undead to go by). This was Sylar’s first ever Australian show.  Lights dimmed and the band dressed head to toe in black (with the sneaky promotion of their own merch) emerged onto stage. Sylar’s guitarist Miguel Cardona had draped across his guitar, an American flag if the crowd didn’t already know they were from the US of A. But by the end of the set, trust me, you knew; as

“We are Sylar from New York”, “We are Sylar from New York”

was echoed over and over through the set.

Punters were more than happy to be intwined with Sylar’s upbeat set, with even a heroic punter getting up on someones shoulders right down the very front at the barrier; before crashing quickly back to the floor. Dare I say the band seemed a little deflated on stage? Who knows, but punters were more than happy to ignore the stigma in the room and have an upbeat night.

And finally, the main act. Miss May I (A little late to stage but the crowd didn’t notice). Miss May I came smashing out on stage as though they were dying to let loose and give the crowd their full energy. High impact vocals and backing instrumentals left the crowd cheering. Time was somewhat wasted during their set though as members of the band had to walk off to side stage to grab their next instrument in-between songs. Idled silence was left at a minimal, but still managed to leave an impact. Just like any show at The Triffid, the acoustics echoed off the walls and lights seemed to hit every nook and cranny within the arched bunker. Punters cheered and shouted straight back at Miss May I for the whole duration of the night.

This was Miss May I’s first Australian show in over four years, and the band constantly thanked everyone for coming to the show. It was a long four years I must admit.

Look, I’m not going to sugar coat the evening. Crowds were abysmal; even for a rainy Monday night. It would of been fantastic to see more punters pack The Triffid but this wasn’t the case. Not to mention the racial slurs and sexual assumptions and comments I overheard coming into the venue. I know the subject is topical and I don’t partially want to delve into it, but it left some with a feeling of uncertainty on the night.

Don’t miss out on the remaining The Shadows Inside tour dates when they come rolling through your city. Yes Adelaide and Perth, you’re including as well.
