WHAT A SHOW!

Reuben Stone started off the night with a killer set. The wacky New Zealander/ Melbournian kicked off with a crazy mix of beats that had the audience squealing. This one man band created a sound that’s truly out of this world, with guitar, bass, beat-box, melodica, synthesizer and even a trombone thrown in! Master of live loops, Stone created spontaneous and crazy sounds that blended the most diverse range of styles into one – rock, funk, dub, jazz, electronica, you name it – and he had the whole room buzzing! After laying down a few of his own groovy mixes and songs, he concluded with a unique cover of Men at Work’s Down Under that had everybody in the place dancing along! Stone with his musical talents and comedic flair was the perfect start to what was an incredible night.

When the Pierce Brothers came out onto the stage, I was not prepared for the crowd’s reaction. I had never before had the opportunity to see these guys live but I knew all their music, and it wasn’t until they started playing that I realised what all the fuss was about. Patrick was fierce on the guitar bringing a sneaky yet individual John Butler vibe that was complemented ever so nicely with Jack’s energetic rhythms on a mix of percussion that drove a set that had every single person in the venue on their feet the whole time!

With momentous energy and a passion that was electric, the twins gave absolutely all of themselves to every song. The boys, so genuine and talented sang their hearts out and played their instruments with everything they had. I understood now why the Pierce Brothers are so renowned for their live performance. With their humble beginnings of busking on the streets of Melbourne to a warm captivating theatre show that is a definite must see! If you ever get the chance to see them perform live I recommend you do it because I know for a fact you will have an great time!

The Melbourne boys were welcomed by the crowd with open arms and screaming worship. Playing some of their popular tracks like It’s My Fault, Tallest Teepee in Town, and the crowd pleaser Overdose, the Pierce Brothers also treated Sydney to a sneaky preview of some of the songs off their new EP The Records Were Ours which was not officially being released until the next day! The single Take Me Out had from the new EP had a wild response from the audience as it was the freshest of the known songs in the set list. It had been 2 years since the brothers had released anything new and the single was preemptive of the much anticipated release of the new EP, so with the song fresh on the mind the crowd roared and cheered with an endless bounce from start to finish.

A stage presence, energy and performance quality that will, (forgive me) knock your socks off, the Pierce Brothers put on one hell of an awesome show! Swapping instruments, hair flying everywhere, jumping into the audience with their guitars, making their way upstairs playing the railings with drum sticks, incorporating a didgeridoo to songs, throwing in a harmonica or two, telling stories and having general conversation with the audience, Jack drumming on Pat’s guitar and so many other little details that made this show, it was truly an intimate, action packed and downright AWESOME night!

When the last song closed to a wailing of fans, the crowd begged for more. That could not possible be it, and of course it wasn’t. With a sweet encore of the hit Golden Times and Genevieve the lovely Pierce Brothers gratefully and gracefully bowed out and headed straight to greet their adoring fans.

I think of myself as somewhat of a harsh critic, but there is nothing bad, negative or otherwise to say about the Pierce Brothers. Their genuine, down to earth, pure talent and honest performance can only be described as nothing but positive! I came away from the show on a high and felt like I had just experienced something real, something magical and something that makes me want to sing my heart out all the way home!

This show was the first of what is a grand world tour and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to experience some of this Aussie talent!
