Q&A with Zachary Scott Rutter [of Bella Rose]

Texan beauties Bella Rose…a quartet that brings a modern, yet nostalgic sound to active pop and rock music. Featuring Zachary Scott Rutter (vocals), Kendall Davis (guitar), Patrick Nikel (bass) and Justin Miller (drums); Bella Rose released their single The Wayside back in May this year. It signals the tone of the band that encapsulates the late 80s era of Guns N Roses to the current anthem-like melodies of Fall Out Boy – it is a pop rock sound that is true to them and completely genuine. Rutter recently had a chat with AMNplify about the single and so much more. Check it out below!

How and when did the band form?

The answer to this is somewhat twofold, myself and Kendall began playing together about three years ago and initially had a different vision for the band with the sound being more influenced by heavier music. As time went on we wanted to get back to the music which first inspired us. At this point we were fortunate enough to find our drummer Justin and bassist Patrick. With the line-up and goals changed we started working on everything that has been released so far as well as a lot of things coming soon.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I think that for all of us it was the first time we were blown away by a live performance. To have the chance to create those kinds of moments for others is absolutely our focus and we can’t wait to show people what we’ve got in the works.

Who are your main musical influences?

We all listen to a wide variety of music but some of the common denominators are Guns and Roses, Bring Me The Horizon, Fall Out Boy, Beartooth, Of Mice and Men as well as so many others.

What is the inspiration behind The Wayside?

The Wayside is a track about duality. The music we wanted to be anthem-like and energising, but the lyrics discuss caution about what it means to pursue success in music. We wanted this to be reflected in the video as well which is why we chose clips of the “27 club”, people who attained such influence and success but at the ultimate cost.

What inspires your song writing in general?

Musically, I think our main inspiration is growth. We learn something from every song we write and we always try to apply that to the next one. Lyrically, it’s a little more complicated because we talk about a wide variety of topics some of which are light hearted but others certainly come from a darker place. In both cases we are always looking to make more than just a pretty melody whether that comes in the form of tongue in cheek humour or a visceral outcry.

What makes Bella Rose different to similar sounding bands?

Our pants are over 11% tighter than the next leading band.

What would you be doing if you weren’t involved in music?

All of us have additional creative outlets which we take seriously outside of playing together, as it helps in our creativity within the band. If not for playing together, all of us would probably just be more involved in those; as none of us are particularly good at remaining stagnant.

What has been your most memorable career highlight to date?

Absolutely the reception to our video The Wayside. After our reintroduction, we were unsure of how the new music would be received and if people would be excited because it was starting over in a lot of ways for us. At just over a month, we are over 40k views between the different platforms it was released on which we are so humbled by for a band that is really just getting started.

What is something you would like to achieve career-wise that you haven’t done yet?

Probably visual effects present in our live performances. We look forward to introducing it as a way to further separate ourselves from the pack live. However we won’t begin to do so until it is to a level we all agree is pro quality.

If you could play any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

More than any one particular venue we just want to tour indefinitely. All of us have such a passion for live performance and the ability to night after night share that with people passionate about what we’re doing is absolutely the thing we want most. With that said, Austin Texas is our home so playing a venue like the Moody Theater would be an absolute dream come true for all of us.

As a side note we would like to thank AMNplify and Maggie for taking the time to talk with us!
