To the uninformed, Shock Machine can be accented with sounds of Tame Impala, or even Client Liaison. While it may not be a distinctly new sound, it certainly has its own construct. What makes it individual is Shock Machine’s ability to maintain an ethereal melody while incorporating a guitar solo.

While it may be difficult these days for artists to maintain independent sound, Shock Machine keeps their musical tactics synth-heavy and with hooks that belong on the radio. However, it could be discussed that the music lacks conviction, and even though it is not a clear-cut album, it is still a vitality to grip your audience regardless of genre.

The first track, ‘Open up the Sky’ gives a fairly clear insight to the rest of the album. Keeping in mind the album artwork, the song repeats beats and maintains a medicated melody. The seventh track ‘Fire Up My Heart’ doesn’t give much difference. The verse/chorus progression is distinguished through chest voice and falsetto. ‘Strange Waves’ follows suit, although it does incorporate the use of high sounding chime-synths which accents the colourful compilation.

The thing is, while you can maintain and control your individuality, you have no control of what happens outside your own music. Somewhat like a metaphorical comparison to riding a sailboat in the vast open ocean which, ironically, is the theme to Shock Machine’s music video. It’s certainly easy to guess the specific demographic that this music could cater to, however it definitely sounds like it belongs on Triple J.
