Red Bull Sound Select took over one of Sydney’s best underground venues, The Chippendale Hotel last month for a celebration of diversity. Representing a new wave of norm-defying Australian talent, Kllo and HABITS travelled from Melbourne to join local poet and rapper, Kimchi Princi for an evening of unprecedented fun and performance curated by FBi Radio.

This March, the monthly live music series sees I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah at its curation helm with the incredible surprise reunion of Sydney band, Red Riders. From Marrickville’s Red Rattler on March 31, Red Riders will appear for one night only alongside recent I OH YOU signing Brightness, Inner West lads, Shearin’ and Body Type DJs.

In turns with FBi Radio’s Music Director Amelia Jenner and Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko, Ponniah is one of Red Bull Sound Select’s curators, supporting and nurturing live music discovery by pairing established artists with breaking talent across the year’s designated events.

The March lineup features a trio of Australian storytellers and post-punk poets. Remembered as one of Sydney’s jewels in its live music crown, Red Riders will return to the stage five years on from their amicable split in April 2011. With two widely acclaimed LPs and an EP behind them, the four-piece toured relentlessly across the nation and the US with singles like “Ordinary”, “Slide In Next To Me” and “My Love Is Stronger Than Your Love”. Don’t miss their mighty March reunion.

I OH YOU’s newest roster addition, Brightness is remarkable. From Lake Macquarie, Alex Knight wrote his first guitar songs on a water-damaged four-track cassette recorder, selling his music to mates at school for canteen money. After living in London as a touring drummer, Knight returned home ready to share his own music. Interposing joyous scuzzy guitar rock with astute observations on his debut single “Oblivion”, Knight’s recalling of Elliot Smith is only scraping the surface.

From the heart of Sydney’s Inner West, Shearin’ features members of disbanded synth act Bad Jeep. As modern day punk poets, their music transcribes a romanticised version of a utopian summer’s day, critiquing everything from politics to local culture and city living.

Sydney four-piece and leading women of DIY power, Body Type will play a special DJ set to celebrate the occasion.

Join in an evening of reunions, singalongs and storytelling, by registering your RSVP at www.redbullsoundselect.com. Capacity is strictly limited. With RSVP tickets are $3, without door entry is $10. Ensure to arrive early for special offerings, including bespoke food and drink.
