Sonori have released their self-titled debut EP fresh from the buzz surrounding their first single ‘Vanity’ and the accompanying video.

With their sound described as ‘cinematic, experimental journey music’ and ‘post-rock you can dance to’, it really isn’t a surprise that the Katoomba locals booked their first gig – a roller derby – without having played a note together. They started out as an instrumental three-piece made up of looped cellos, guitars/keys and drum machines, and were eventually joined by the eclectic, ethereal vocals of singer Lulu. They quickly discovered that their individual skills and complimentary differences blended with their shared passions and friendly natures, resulting in a special, unique musical style.

Through the recording of this EP, the band says, “we’ve come to realise that in order to feel fulfilled and rewarded we must throw away any self-doubt and fear, and trust that whenever we jump in the ocean with friends, cool things will always happen. That’s this EP: it’s our first dive and the ocean is deep!”

While the lead single ‘Vanity’ served as an introduction to the band, this EP is the fulfilled promise of much more to come, and a result of the band’s hard work, openness and collaborative talents.

When it comes to influencing songwriting, Jasper says “it’s whoever presents their argument in the most verbose and confusing manner to make the others feel that maybe it’s easier to just go along with it. We basically take turns doing that.”

Lulu, however, believes “our blend of fun-loving and existential curiosity, our appreciation of each other’s unique musical voices, and our openness to evolution causes me to believe that we are limitless.”
