They say only fools rush in, but Gold Coast indie-pop duo, Geniie Boy, have been two years in the making, now granting our wishes by joining forces for their debut single, Fool’s Play, out 5 February.

A collaboration between singer-songwriter, Alisha Todd, and award-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist, Scott French, these seasoned musicians are creating ear worms with hooks, beats and harmonies that will keep you humming happily for days.

“Geniie Boy started as an homage to my mother. She changed her name to Jeannie when she migrated to Australia and after she passed away when I was 19, I sold everything I owned and traveled solo around Europe for four years, searching for parts of myself in other cultures and music,” said Alisha, whose authentic antipodean accent is a signature of the duo’s sound.

“I met Scotty when I came home and we instantly started working together on our solo projects. We realised we share a vision to make music that is honest and uplifting and that our individual processes in songwriting and in the studio perfectly complement each other.”

Hailing from the regional Queensland town, Gympie, this first single, Fool’s Play is about Alisha visiting her hometown and childhood friend after being away for so long.

“I came home to find my friend at a crossroads in life and it reminded me of myself a few years ago. This song is basically about one of the things only an old bestie can say to you… ‘stop being a fool, fool!’”

Produced by French in his commercial studio, Lovestreet Studios, this is the first glimpse from Geniie Boy’s debut EP, which is slated for release in 2021.

“Alisha and I come from very different musical backgrounds, so it’s been fun experimenting and finding our sound for Geniie Boy,” said Scott, “You can expect an amalgamation of Maggie Rogers’ pop sensibilities, Corrine Bailey-Rae’s sweetness and a bit of HAIM’s badass energy.”

Sure to be stuck in your head from the first listen, Geniie Boy’s indie pop sound is your perfect Summer companion, with multi-instrumental hooks, danceable drum beats, soaring harmonies and Alisha’s conversational lyrics keeping you company and reminding you, ‘Don’t be a fool!’.

Geniie Boy’s debut single is out 5 February 2021.

Dishing up an amalgamation of Maggie Rogers’ pop sensibilities, Corrine Bailey-Rae’s sweetness and a bit of HAIM’s badass energy, Scott’s musical experiments and slyly sophisticated production style builds perfectly around Alisha’s rich vocals and authentic antipodean accent – a signature of the duo’s sound.

Award-winning musicians in their own right, who have both toured internationally and played some of Australia’s most well loved music festivals, together Geniie Boy are creating ‘memorable and magical’ (Abby Butler, Triple J) ear worms with hooks, beats and harmonies that will have you humming happily for days.
