Naarm/Melbourne-based rock outfit Moaning Lisa have today returned with their stirring new single ‘Inadequacy’. What started as an angsty folk song, has transitioned into the band’s signature alternative rock sound.

Of the track, lead singer Charlie explains “The first line I wrote for the song was about not knowing whether to take your shoes or pants off first when you’re drunk and about to have sex with someone. ‘Inadequacy’ kind of snowballed from there and became this collection of tidbits about all the ways you can feel inadequate – all these tiny snapshots of everyday shortcomings”

‘Inadequacy’ is an amalgamation of the feelings that come with its namesake, and whilst the bones of the song were formed six years ago, the song still resonates with the band in the same way as it did the first day it was played, making its live debut at the band’s second show ever. Originally recorded at Golden Retriever last year and finished at Calum Newton’s home studio back in Melbourne ‘Inadequacy’ has had many incarnations. “Like most of our songs, it’s gone through many lives and eventually found its place as our misfit anthem and, personally, one of our most beloved songs to date,” Moaning Lisa writes.

From the moody, punk-edged riffs accompanied by lead singer Charlie’s vocals in the pre-chorus to powerful, upbeat moments carrying the chorus, this energetic track is “meant to be equal parts moody and upbeat. Something you can simultaneously yell and dance to.” Charlie explains further: “I guess it makes sense that a song literally called ‘Inadequacy’ made us feel so torn and unsure on so many occasions”.
