22-year-old singer songwriter Kat Edwards has emerged to unveil her powerful new single ‘Safety’, out now via BMG and produced by Dylan Nash (Gretta Ray, Angus & Julia Stone, Dean Lewis).

Through heartbreak comes self-reflection and confidence and Kat Edwards manufactures warmth and perspective out of the darkness, “Before, even though I could see this brilliant bright glittery future, I was so uncomfortable and scared of anything new. When the world paused, things began to change, and now the idea of exploring, giving my all to music, to move past my Social Anxiety now inspires me.”

Obviously, it is couched in the understanding that it will still feel cloudy sometimes – clouds are a part of nature, after all – but the true indicator of Kat Edwards’ growth, is that it’s not all clouds, all of the time.

“You see, I am ready to be brave, see the world and believe that goodness lies in the unknown instead of fearing it, accepting that what scares me may one day become my friend. I want to meet new people, challenge myself and grow. I want to dive in and throw all the paint at the wall for the first time. If this sounds like you, let us be brave together”.

The single, which received a first play on triple j Good Nights and has since scored a spot add plus picked up airplay on Home & Hosed and 2021 with Richard Kingsmill, showcases Kat’s stunning vocals, setting the tone for the track as she delves into the breakdown of a relationship and the struggle of wanting that other person to still love you while demanding better for yourself and not settling as someone’s second choice.

Reflecting on the recording process Kat says, “It was one of the most blissful experiences I have ever had in the studio. It was my first time working with Dylan Nash, but he just seemed to immediately understand me and the world I wanted to build around the song. I remember we referenced Arctic Monkeys and Phoebe Bridgers, and I was also listening to The Slow Rush by Tame Impala a lot. I loved how the bass at 3:16 in ‘Borderline’ got a little more distorted and fuzzier. We did a similar thing in Safety for the final chorus, and I think it really helped make it all feel a lot more climactic.”

To coincide with the release Kat has shared the clip for ‘Safety’, a moody and contemplative visual, shot by Gabriel Morrison (Lucid Cinema) and set around her hometown of Lutruwita / Tasmania.

Kat describes the clip, “Gabriel showed me a treatment for a music video he had already written and it just so happened that it fit really well with the concept and lyrics of Safety. We shot in a number of different locations, under Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, Lake Gordon and Taroona Beach. I was freezing the entire time, and a little seasick for a couple of the shots on the water but it was a really fun process, and a lot of laughs were had. We were lucky that a few of our friends offered to help pull everything together.”

‘Safety’ follows on from previous releases ‘Good Girl’ and ‘Don’t Call Me’ which garnered praise from triple j, unearthed, Pilerats and Fashion Journal as well as receiving airplay across major community radio stations.

On the stage Kat is a shining presence, as she draws in the crowd and weaves her magic like any great storyteller. She has performed at some of the best festivals in the country including Panama Festival, Falls Music and Arts Festival, Party In the Paddock, Grampians Music Festival and Til The Wheels Fall Off. She has also hit the stage and supported some of Australia’s best artists including Paul Kelly, Didirri, Stella Donnelly, Alex The Astronaut, Luca Brasi, All Our Exes Live In Texas and US artist Julien Baker.

Performing the new single for the very first time, Kat will be supporting The Paper Kites at Odeon Theatre in February 2022, along with a slot at Tasmania’s Great Escape Festival in March where she will be sharing the stage with artists like Jack River, Maddy Jane and Sycco to name a few.

If you’ve listened to Kat Edwards’ music before: no, you haven’t. This is a rebirth. Nature is growth and it is dynamism, for sure, but it is also operating on its own schedule, and it only ever happens when it’s good and ready. Kat Edwards is ready.
