Sydney-born singer, songwriter and storyteller Alex The Astronaut (Alex Lynn) is delighted to announce her forthcoming debut album The Theory Of Absolutely Nothing due out Friday 21 August. Brought to life with bright melodies, plucked guitar and Alex’s unmistakable vocals, the ten track collection is the work of a storyteller attuned to the world around her and is available for pre-order/pre-save here.

Alex says: “Releasing my first album feels like I’m graduating from junior musician to proper musician. I have so many mind maps and brainstorming pages in my writing book where I was trying to work out what I wanted it all to look like. I wanted the songs to mean something to me, to sit in my values, and I also wanted them to be a group of songs that told stories that meant something to the people that heard them. I feel really proud of all of these ten songs, it feels like I’ve put a little bit of myself and the world I see in all of them. I’ve spent hundreds of hours thinking about writing them and I’m pretty nervous to share it all with everyone. I’ve called it “The Theory of Absolutely Nothing” because I feel like the Einstein quote “the more I learn, the more I realise how much I don’t know” really started to make sense to me during this writing process and apart of that comes through in a different way in each song. Thank you to Sam, Dan Nora, Jonathan, Holly, Jen, and Victor for making it with me, I hope you all enjoy my first album: “The Theory of Absolutely nothing. Alex xx”

Following a premiere on triple j’s Good Nights yesterday, Alex also shares new single ‘Lost’ today. Speaking of the track, she says: “Lost” is about trying to find your way and fix everything, and the moment where you’ve exhausted all options and have to accept the fact that there is so much that is completely out of your control: sometimes you will just feel lost. The song is pivoted around a moment of change when someone is walking new ground and they really don’t know what’s to come. For me it’s one of those “one goes out, one comes in” times when you lose what you hoped things would be like but you get to move through a different world that maybe will show you something you didn’t know you would see.”

Alex The Astronaut has always had a supernatural knack for capturing human experience in song. On The Theory Of Absolutely Nothing, she explores friendship, love, loss, pain and change, weaving a constellation of stories about the personal reckonings that come with growing up. The album features the anthemic ‘Happy Song’ and the uplifting ‘I Think You’re Great’ as well as ‘I Like To Dance’ and ‘Split The Sky’, which have earned praise and support both here and abroad from triple j, The Guardian, NPR and Refinery29, among others.

The Theory Of Absolutely Nothing follows on from two highly acclaimed EPs (To Whom It May Concern and See You Soon) and a slew of big singles, which have had a way of landing at just the right moment. Alex’s breakout track ‘Already Home’ arrived in 2016 and features the now-iconic line ‘And there’s billionaires for presidents / And parking fines at hospitals’. In 2017, she returned with ‘Not Worth Hiding’, an open letter to her 16 year old self that details the journey to her own sexuality. The track arrived as Australia was debating marriage equality and became the unofficial anthem of the Vote Yes movement. The mammoth single then went on to receive support from Elton John on his Beats 1 radio show and score #23 in triple j’s Hottest 100. Alex has since performed at a number of renowned international festivals including The UK’s Great Escape, Primavera Sound in Spain and Neighbourhood Festival in Manchester. Back at home, she’s lapped the country on a sold out national headline tour, played a stack of festivals including Byron Bay’s Splendour in the Grass, and graced the stage at triple j’s One Night Stand.

Alex the Astronaut has always delved deep into what makes us human. On The Theory Of Absolutely Nothing, she grapples with the multitudes of life on a bigger scale than ever before and emerges optimistic.
