Sarah McLachlan’s Angel is the song that made Hayley Jensen a household name in 2004 after performing it on Australian Idol. Out today through Social Family Records, landing at #1 on the iTunes Country Singles Chart, this commemorative version of the haunting, yet uplifting, ballad has been recorded as a duet with one of Hayley’s own musical idols, legendary Australian country music star, Beccy Cole, and produced by multi-award-winning producer, Matt Fell, featuring Michel Rose on pedal steel and Scott Aplin on piano.

Hayley and Beccy met in 2004 whilst performing for Coalition Forces in the Middle East with the Australian Defence Force. The shared experience forged a strong friendship, that years on would lead to this stunningly beautiful vocal collaboration.

A Note from Hayley about Angel

“16 years ago I performed ‘Angel’ on a popular television show, Australian Idol. The support I received from a legion of fans beyond that moment was a dream come true – an experience that would change the course of my life forever…

At the time of auditioning, my beautiful Dad, who is sadly no longer here with us on this earth, suggested I perform ‘Angel’ as it would showcase my unique voice. He was right, and extremely proud when I made it through with a song he’d chosen. When we played the song at his funeral, I felt he was smiling down on me. Precious memories I hold dear.

I sang ‘Angel’ night after night at entertainment centres across the country as part of the ‘Idol Tour’. Each time, thousands of audience members would stand, listening in complete silence. You could hear a pin drop. The same would happen at my own shows for years to come. Very humbling indeed.

Later, I was invited to entertain Coalition Forces in the Middle East. Legendary Australian country music star, Beccy Cole was also one of the entertainers, and we became great friends (you may even see me in her ‘Poster Girl’ music video – otherwise I was likely behind the camera!) I performed ‘Angel’ at all of our shows on that tour. It was incredibly moving to see grown men and women in military attire with tears in their eyes.

That year, I performed the song at a Carols event where Beccy was also in the lineup. When the time came for me to sing, she emerged from the side of the stage to join me on the harmonies. Our voices, though different, blended perfectly. It was truly magical.

Beccy inspires me. She is an artist who’s found her tribe and forged a successful career that has stood the test of time. As I reflect, this song HAS marked many key moments for me becoming an artist in my own right. It taught me how to use my voice – really use it, to be authentic as a songwriter and convincing as a storyteller.

All of these experiences were defining moments in my life and career, and what better way to commemorate them, than to record a special duet version of ‘Angel’ with the one and only Beccy Cole. I hope this song changes your life as much as it changed mine.”
