Human Design by Birds Of Tokyo has debuted at #1 on this week’s ARIA Albums Chart, extending the recent run of local releases to dominate the poll position. The album took nearly four years to make and becomes the band’s first chart topper since 2013’s “March Fires”. Lead by the hit singles  “Unbreakable”, “The Greatest Mistakes”, “Good Lord” and “Two Of Us”, Human Design traces singer Ian Kenny’s struggle to overcome a very tough period in his life. It’s a theme which has clearly resonated with cooped-up music fans given today’s chart debut.

Drummer Adam Weston said, “We’re so happy to receive the news that Human Design has topped the ARIA charts!  Thanks to everyone who got behind us during such a crazy time. It has been an incredible journey making this very cathartic record and it couldn’t have been done without the support of many who work closely with us and of course our fans who allow us to continue doing what we do.  We can’t wait to tour where we can further bring these songs to life.”

The release has also been warmly welcomed by critics, earning Birds Of Tokyo some of the best reviews they’ve ever had. For example:

“Each track is crafted with imagination and delivered with authentic, heartfelt emotion, all embodied in the voice and lyrics of Ian Kenny”  **** The Music

“Years in the making, ‘Human Design’ sees Birds of Tokyo triumphing through tragedy, and crafting an exceptional release that is arguably their most powerful to date.”  Rolling Stone

“This is a highpoint for the band. These are stirring songs for the soul.” STACK

“Borne from a place of pain, Human Design sees Ian Kenny and co. diving deep into the well of raw emotions to craft a record that is as powerful as it is hopeful, making it stand as one of the year’s most important releases.”  The Industry Observer / ALBUM OF THE WEEK

“Human Design is a remarkably stirring album, bursting with singalong moments and bountiful pop-rock hooks.” Sunday Herald Sun

Human Design was supposed to be launched from this weekend via a series of major concerts with Australia’s leading Symphony Orchestras but those dates all had to be moved to January due to the Covid19 shutdowns. Nonetheless, the band still gave audiences a taste of what those shows will be like when they collaborated with The West Australian Symphony Orchestra for an extraordinary ‘at home’ version of “Unbreakable” on last weekend’s “Music From The Homefront” TV broadcast. A series of other ‘at home’ performances streamed via various channels over the last few weeks have also helped the band spread the word about their new work, leading to today’s #1.

On Tuesday May 26 Birds Of Tokyo will feature in Australia’s first virtual Awards show – the APRA’s – which recognise achievements in songwriting. The band has won APRA Awards in six previous years and they are nominated twice in 2020 for “Good Lord”.
