“The name for the company came quite easily and it was truly a light bulb moment when we were discussing what we want the business to stand for. We want to create an Open Door policy where our artists feel free to be part of the process and not be in the dark with anything happening in their careers. Also, an Open Door into creating new opportunities for our artists and that the sky is the limit when it comes to what we are trying to achieve together.”Chris O’Brien and Joshua Smith

Industry veteran, Chris O’Brien and established self-managed musician, Joshua Smith, are thrilled to reveal their joint partnership, Open Door Management, serving artists with an unmatched perspective. They have combined their respective artist rosters which includes Introvert, Northlane, Stateside, Void Of Vision and welcome the additions of Make Them Suffer and Windwaker to their impressive repertoire.

“We met up for a beer socially earlier this year and we had a very organic conversation about management and the issues surrounding parts of the industry and how it was impacting artists. The idea made sense immediately to create an alliance and the new company was forged that day. We agreed there was a huge gap in the market for a management company that combined experience from both sides of the industry. We felt that the power needed to be handed back to artists and give them more control over their careers. We want to create an environment where they are part of the decision-making process across all facets. This is their livelihoods and we are merely the guardians which seems to have struck a chord already which is really exciting.” Says Chris O’Brien and Joshua Smith

They add, “We won’t be focusing on any specific genres just looking to work with artists that we love and that we think we can make wholesale differences to in their careers.”

Chris O’Brien began working in the music industry in the late 90’s, starting out as an artist manager shaping the careers of multiple gold and platinum artists including The Mavis’s, Area 7 and Bodyjar amongst others. A career in promoting was also beckoning and he started working with KMW Productions on international artists such as Korn, Paramore, The Offspring, Megadeth, Eels, Nine Inch Nails and Deftones. In 2007 he was appointed General Manager of Soundwave Festival which quickly became the largest touring Festival in Australia with some of the world’s biggest bands gracing its stages including Metallica, blink-182, Linkin Park, Faith No More, Green Day, Soundgarden, System Of A Down and Queens Of The Stone Age. He was also appointed General Manager of Vans Warped Tour and Harvest Festival. In 2016 he joined Destroy All Lines as the touring boss and helped create Good Things Festival – bringing a vibrant new event back into the Australian market. He also reignited his passion for artist management and is now forging a new and ground breaking partnership with Joshua Smith.

Joshua Smith is a founding member of the two-time ARIA Award winning act, Northlane. Since 2010 he has been traversing the globe, performing countless concerts with acts such as Parkway Drive, Bring me the Horizon, and Architects.

He’s also undertaken multiple headline world tours and played at some of the biggest music festivals in the world such as Download UK, France and Australia, Nova Rock, With Full Force, Hellfest, Soundwave, Big Day Out, Good Things Festival, Resurrection Fest, Summer Breeze, Graspop, Hammersonic and Groezrock. He’s been involved with recording 4 studio albums, two of which hit #3 and one of which debut #1 on the ARIA albums chart. Josh managed Northlane until 2012 and reassumed the responsibility in early 2018. Successfully balancing this with another music-supply retail business, Boutique Sounds, he provides unique insight and empathy as an artist manager with thousands of miles on the road under his belt.

“Our joint roster includes Northlane, Void Of Vision, Introvert and Stateside. We are so excited to announce that our first signings for Open Door Management are Make Them Suffer and Windwaker who will be joining our growing family and we couldn’t be happier. We are looking to shake things up from a management perspective and deliver incredible results for all our artists.”
