In its heyday, the Big Day Out was the world’s biggest touring music festival. For music fans, it was an Australian rite of passage. Every band on the planet wanted to be on the line-up, and the backstage parties were legendary. But what made it so successful and why did it collapse?

Throughout October, Double J will look back at an iconic era in Australian music history, with live music galore and a five-part podcast series diving deep Inside The Big Day Out.

The podcast tells the story of the pioneering music festival – told by the people behind it, the musicians who played it and the punters who went year after year.

There are incredible contributions from members of Beasts of Bourbon, Cosmic Psychos, Eskimo Joe, Frenzal Rhomb, Grinspoon, Jebediah, Magic Dirt, Powderfinger, Shihad, The Clouds, The Living End, Tiddas, You Am I and Violent Femmes.

Plus of course Big Day Out’s own Ken West, Vivien Lees, Sahara Herald, Adam Zammit and AJ Maddah. We also hear from triple j alumni Jen Oldershaw who attended the very first Big Day Out, and Jessica Michalik’s best friend, who was with Jessica at the festival when she tragically passed away.

Hosted by Gemma Pike, Inside The Big Day Out will be available as a five-part podcast – Episode 1 is now up, with new episodes going live every Tuesday from 8 October. Listen via the triple j app (for iPhone and Android) and Apple Podcasts.

But that’s not all!

For 20 years, triple j was backstage at the Big Day Out, recording all the incredible live performances. Now, Double J have gone back through those archives, so you can relive the best live music moments from the Big Day Out at Midday every day in October.

We’ll also play you Live at the Wireless double headers at 7pm Tuesdays in October including sets from the likes of Grinspoon, Fatboy Slim, Magic Dirt, M.I.A., Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of A Down and more.

Plus Caz Tran will play you a Classic Album from an iconic Big Day Out artist at 7pm Mondays in October, including Hole, Lily Allen, Prodigy, Shihad and more.

‘Inside The Big Day Out’
podcast episodes

EP 1: A Vision of Nirvana
What started out as a Violent Femmes headline tour with Nirvana on support, ended in a one-day music festival with 21 bands after Nirvana released Nevermind and suddenly the Big Day Out were dealing with the biggest band in the world.

EP 2: The Big Day Off
The Big Day Out got lucky a second time and booked Silverchair right before they blew up, solidifying them as the Aussie festival every music fan wanted to be at, and every artist wanted to play. We hear about the backstage antics, the parties and the tantrums, including the time Marilyn Manson flooded backstage.

EP 3: The Age of Innocence is Over
The 2001 Big Day Out saw the tragic death of Jessica Michalik during Limp Bizkit’s Sydney set. Jessica’s best friend Liza Ryan was with her on that fateful day and brings us an emotional story of the human behind the headline, while Phil Jamieson, from Jessica’s favourite band Grinspoon, recalls performing at her memorial.

EP 4: Art Vs. Commerce
While ticket sales soar to hundreds of thousands in the 2000s, artistic differences saw Ken and Viv’s relationship reach breaking point. Sahara, who’d been the glue holding everything together, finally broke and ended up in rehab. After a disastrous response to the 2012 line-up, Viv quit and sold his share to C3.

EP 5: Give It Away Now
In 2014 more artistic differences arose between Ken and C3. Not able to agree on two headliners, they booked three. It was a financial burden the festival couldn’t handle. About to lose everything, Ken West sold his share to AJ Maddah who steered the ship for what was to become the very last Big Day Out.
