Eves Karydas’ latest single, ‘Couch,’ has proven to be one of her most captivating releases yet.

With over 800K streams, international radio play, and pages of adoring blog reviews, the song has been instrumental in defining Karydas’ place in the indie pop world in 2018.

From its thudding bassline, bouncy synth bursts and her wistfully isolated and echoed vocals – you can’t even read the lyrics: “He’s on my couch, I’m watching his mouth,” without hearing its incredibly addictive melody.

Reviews of the infectious single have been quick to draw comparisons with Karydas’ sound and the heyday of brilliant, early ’90s, chart-topping pop. After all, it’s difficult to not associate those loudly whispered, “Na-na-na-na-na-na-nas,” with the melodies, tones and production that made artists like Kylie Minogue megastars.

Now, the video for ‘Couch’ – directed by Jake Jelicich (Dua Lipa, Niall Horan, DMA’S) – has arrived and is only going to draw those comparisons more, thanks to its beautifully affectionate nod to the sultry music videos of the ’90s. Elegant-yet-sexy outfits, striking colour choices, soft focus lenses, jolted time-delay shots – classic film clip maneuvers of the period, used in this circumstance to enhance the single’s stylised, modern context.

The video premiered on the global taste-maker site Wonderland, who said “Last year’s banger “There For You” firmly cemented her position as one of the most exciting emerging artists to keep an eye on. Now she’s back with her new single, “Couch”, and if anything, it’s confirmed this status.”

‘Couch’ is the third outstanding single to be released from Eves Karydas’ debut album, which is scheduled for release later in the year via Dew Process/UMA. Along with its predecessors in ‘There For You,’ and ‘Further Than The Planes Fly,’ the former Brisbane-turned-London indie pop star has displayed a new-found sensuality and effervescent energy, and this new direction has been quickly celebrated by fans and critics alike, with the songs climbing to over 5 million streams worldwide and universal media praise.

‘Couch’ has been in particular one of the most lauded of her recent releases. The song premiered via the airwaves on triple j Good Nights, and was co-written with Sam Dixon (Adele, Christina Aguilera, Sia). Produced by Karydas, Dixon, and her long-time collaborator Chris Zane (Passion Pit, Bat For Lashes) as well as friend and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, the song is inspired by a snapshot of romance that often goes unnoticed and yet reveals so much.

“Couch is about a small intimate moment with someone, and how that can make you feel volumes,” says Karydas. “I wrote it when I moved into my first flat in London. I was suddenly feeling more ambitious and empowered than I’d ever felt in my life. That’s what this song is about at its core: confidence in yourself.”

Since relocating to the UK in 2015, Karydas has been inspired to craft over 50 songs, the cream of which have been skimmed for her aforementioned, forthcoming debut album.

The music she has penned in the northern hemisphere has led to some of the most triumphant moments of her career, including supporting the likes of incredibly popular Brisbane alt-pop stars Cub Sport on their Australian, 10-date headline album tour, as well as supporting British pop-star, Dua Lipa’s two sold-out headline shows at The Palais in Melbourne and Big Top in Sydney.

She’s now poised to take the stage at the newly re-launched Spin Off festival in Adelaide, alongside international and local stars, including The Wombats and The Smith Street Band.

She then heads to Byron Bay and the stage at Splendour In The Grass 2018 – the second time she’s appeared on the legendary line-up, this time alongside the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Lorde.

Next month she’ll then embark on her own run of solo shows for the ‘Couch’ Single Tour. Tickets for these performances are selling fast, so get in quickly before you miss the chance to hear her fabulous new music, as well as a sneak peek at some of what the forthcoming record has instore.
