Dario Argento – Suspiria
A stunning use of colour. The world Argento creates is so obviously artificial, yet the use of blues, reds and yellows over the entire world compels the suspension of belief. The elaborately constructed sets and in innumerous light tricks (some of which are actually quite DIY) force you into the supernatural nightmare. Of course, the Goblin score must be noted too!!

.

Gasper Noe – Climax
This film has a 42 minute long take. If you’ve ever been involved in one of these, you’ll know just how mental this is as an idea. Aside from the technical mastery, this is a film that manages the most visceral reactions in its audience. People can’t help but scream at their gut reaction. Many will walk out because it’s too much. It’s like being locked in a bad drug trip and manages to unfurl in the exact same way.

.

Tarkovsky – Solaris
Many already know our love affair with this film (See our Solaris film clip here). About a psychologist who is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane, this is a film that manages to unpack your psyche and hand it back to you in 20 different pieces that are all equally confusing as each other.  Tarkovsky was largely inspired by paintings to construct his scenes – such as Bruegel’s The Hunters in the Snow.

.

Gregory Crewdson
This guy is a photographer who treats his photos like full-on film sets. He will set houses on fire to capture them in still form! His lighting gives the photos a painting-like quality to them, which is a pretty cool kind of reverse engineering.

Maya Derin
She made cat videos before they were a thing! Her 1944 silent film The Private Life of a Cat is entirely shot from a cat’s eye level. It follows two kittens’ lives in an apartment as they grow up. It is utterly heartwarming and can only imagine how utterly bizarre it would have seemed in 1944 as the concept for an entire film.

“From quiet and delicate to thrashing out angst ridden melodies, they were a prescience to be witnessed..” – Ditch This Magazine, 2018

“I totally see the Gareth Liddiard comparisons! I found myself being constantly impressed and surprised from start to finish.” -Veronica Milson (Triple J)

“It’s like Mogwai or Explosions In The Sky but with actual vocals, and if that doesn’t sound amazing to you, I don’t know what will!” -Killyourstereo

A catalyst to engaging and discovering your psyche, and contemplating deeper and darker reasoning, Fierce Mild has been described as a synthesis of David Lynch & The Drones – a group that draws from cinema, visual art and Australian history, as much as any musical influences, to craft their intricate brand of Post-Electro Cinematic Art Rock. After a small respite, the Melbourne outfit are now back with their new release “No Sense”.

The new single was recorded at Echidna Studio in Christmas Hills in Victoria, with the talented Nikita Miltiadou. Drawing from the emotional turmoil of losing a close friend, the song explores the trading of death and life as lead singer, Troy explains;

“This song was written when my friend died of cancer. He was only 25 and a very talented comedian who never really got to share any of that with the world. I tried so many different ways of expressing how I was feeling at the time of his death. To sum up our joint experience on earth. However, it just all proved too trite, in a way he would never have wanted.  In the end the wind took all those words away and I felt myself melting into the process of grief eventually accepting that it was something I would never understand. The perpetual trading of human life as well as any other sentience that you can call life on earth.”

After showcasing their unique brand of live performances at Brisbane’s music festival & conference BIGSOUND, 2017 saw the group critically acclaimed as one of Australia’s standout new acts by the industry, patrons and media alike. Since then, they have signed to GAGA Music and have shared the stage with the likes of sleepmakeswaves as well as And So I Watch You From Afar.

The music and artwork of Fierce Mild explore on the idea of waking the sleeping, and separating from the constructed world around us. Time is altered as multiple images are displayed at once as the band’s live performance combines music, sound art and three channels of live projection art to create an immersive experience across multiple senses.

Fierce Mild is known for their groundbreaking multimedia convergences. Their 2018 VR experience sold out and was promptly booked for the opening night of West Projections, VIVID 2018 and Melbourne Music Week 2018, while also being exhibited at Clipped Music Video Festival. Their debut album is to be released on Stargazed Records this year.
