“BETTER THAN LOVE”

New Zealand duo Foley manage to deliver yet again with another masterfully crafted electro-pop new single “Better Than Love” – out Friday 5th February. “Better Than Love” is the prospect of love, versus the reality of love – closing yourself off from emotion to save yourself from future heartbreak. When love is so built up to us as extravagant, dramatic and awe consuming, how can it ever live up to our expectations?

Foley’s tight friendship (Ash Wallace, Gabriel Everett) allows them to write openly and vulnerably with each other – “Better Than Love” continuing on that course. The song explores the tentative beginning of a new relationship (‘let me be a little cautious’), not wanting to move too quickly and risk being let down (‘tryna save us from the torture’). It can be safer and easier to stay in one place emotionally, to not let yourself feel too much and get your hopes up (‘can we float without moving forward, we could just tread some water’). Foley pushes through the hesitation and turmoil, into the possibility of something great.
Written with longtime friends and collaborators Josh Naley (Wells*) and Jonathan Boyle (Julius Black), “Better Than Love” happened in a day, pouring out effortlessly and honestly onto the page.
“This song was incredibly therapeutic for me – coming from a place of fear and mistrust and finally saying it out loud,” said Ash. “Gabe has been in a relationship for a long time, and by comparison being thrown into something completely new and terrifying, it’s the first time the two of us have had really contrasting experiences like this in our writing. When you have been hurt in the past you get into the mindset that nothing can be as good as it seems. I felt at one point like I shouldn’t try anymore because the way I built love up in my head could never be reached in reality. Self-sabotage is really powerful and you end up manifesting disappointment instead of hoping for something great.”

Ash and Gabriel formed Foley in 2017, as the passion project between two best friends, and it is this friendship which continues to lead as one of the driving factors behind their effortless and well-composed releases. In a male-dominated industry where female vocalists are heavily commodified, it is important to note the equality that the duo enforce in the creation of their music. Their songs are crafted together; 50/50, no one artist more involved than another.
The duo’s development since their early days starting out, has made them a force to be reckoned with as emerging electronic-pop artists in the industry. Spending last year refining their sound, Foley have started off the new year with a smash hit that will ensure their success throughout New Zealand and beyond.
Their debut EP On My Conscience, saw huge success across commercial radio and streaming platforms, hitting #10 on the NZ Album Charts and plastered the pair across multiple Spotify playlist covers. Their single “Midnight” was added across all major NZ radio stations, landing the pair their first radio Top 40 chart position, while also becoming the #1 independent song on NZ Radio on both the overall chart and the Pop Top 40 (a feat also achieved with previous single “Cola”).
Now gearing up for 2021, Foley have unveiled “So Personal”, which was added across-the-board to major radio playlists instantly on release & fan-track “Rendezvous” – setting the stage for their sophomore effort.
“Better Than Love” is available to stream on all platforms now.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
