The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra takes audiences from Beethoven to Bond and beyond in 2020, with the opening months of the year filled with exciting outdoor performances at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, sensational celebratory events at Hamer Hall and an extraordinary line-up of local and international artists gracing our Melbourne stages alongside the MSO.

The season blasts off with A Live Presentation of 2001: A Space Odyssey with the MSO performing the much-loved classical score live, under the baton of Benjamin Northey, to Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 1968 film.

The MSO’s annual Chinese New Year celebration will be led by eminent conductor Yi Zhang in a performance starring young Chinese pianist Jieni Wan. This special event will be followed by another popular Melbourne tradition, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl free concert series taking place over three magical nights under the stars.

The Orchestra’s night of nights, the Season Opening Gala will feature a beautiful performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, but with a twist. On stage with the Orchestra will be Australian legends of dance, drama and performance, Circa Contemporary Circus. Also on this spectacular Gala program is the world premiere of the latest work from Deborah Cheetham, the MSO’s 2020 Composer in Residence.

Fans and lovers of the renowned Studio Ghibli films of Hayao Miyazaki can rejoice when legendary composer and conductor Joe Hisaishi performs an Australian exclusive of his famed film music at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. This special event follows a program celebrating Maestro Hisaishi’s contemporary symphonic repertoire in a music-only concert at Hamer Hall.

Two extraordinary classical programs await in March when An Alpine Symphony with American conductor Alexandra Shelley is followed by an exquisite performance of Scheherazade led by renowned Peruvian maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

Newcomer Christian Liwho is just 12 years old, performs violin in a solo performance with the Orchestra in a program featuring Mendelssohn and Beethoven and in a special encore performance, renowned musician Ben Folds joins the MSO for a one-night-only Melbourne event as part of his national tour.

James Bond makes a welcome return to the screen in Skyfall with the MSO performing the mighty score in this fast selling concert experience at Hamer Hall.

Throughout Summer and more, there is something for every music lover with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are on sale now. For further information visit here
