Thursday 10 October, Sydney. Today HEAPS GAY has announced the return of their street festival after sellout years in 2017/18. Taking a break in 2019 due to the original location of the festival being claimed by Westconnex, Sydney’s best LGBTQ+ party starters are back with ROADWERK FESTIVAL in a bigger industrial location in the Inner West and new addition Newcastle. Bringing a multi-faceted program of live music, performance, art installation and DJs including international selectors, ROADWERK will be heading to Marrickville on January 18th and a TBC location in Newcastle on January 25th.

Embracing summer festivities and the rich pool of talent these cities have to offer, ROADWERK 2020 will put a focus on local NSW talent along with a broad range of Australian and international music selections. ROADWERKS full live music and arts lineup will be revealed on October 30th following an all welcome launch party at LGBTQ+ community hub The Bearded Tit on the 29th. Previous HEAPS GAY events have seen appearances from the likes of NGAIIRE, ALICE IVY, NO ZU, TOUCH SENSITIVE, OKENYO, VANESSA AMOROSI, TT THE ARTIST, LE1F, NIMMO, ELECTRIC FIELDS, COLLARBONES, KOTA BANKS, CLYPSO, MISS BLANKS and more.

With diversity of all kinds sitting at the core of ROADWERK, the festival will be partnering with Sydney based youth broadcasters FBI RADIO and first nations lead KOORI RADIO to present the live music program. As with previous years KOORI RADIO will be returning to curate a proportion of the live music lineup featuring local First Nations musicians with star drag queen and radio host FELICIA FOXX on MC duties. Tying in closely to the local community the event is working with and supported by the INNER WEST COUNCIL. Sitting between Sydenham station and community institutions such as the Red Rattler Theatre and Marrickville Bowling Club, the location of ROADWERK in 2020 is a quiet little industrial corner just around the bend from the previous location.

After a year of sellout events in Newcastle, HEAPS GAY is excited to announce that ROADWERK will be coming to an industrial street location in the heart of the city. Following the closure of Newcastle’s only queer focused venue in 2018, HEAPS GAY packed its bags and teamed up with the Lass O’Gowrie to make sure the LGBTQ+ community had somewhere to party. Becoming a part of the city’s creative community, ROADWERK will be teaming up with the CREATOR INCUBATOR and BANSHEE COLLECTIVE on arts and live music for the second stage showcasing local talent.

ROADWERK 2020 wouldn’t be possible without generous funding from Create NSW as part of the Music Now Contemporary Live Music Round grant. For more information on Create NSW’s important funding of live music, visit their website HERE

HEAPS GAY are inviting media, partners and pals to the launch of ROADWERK 2020 on Tuesday, 29th October 2019 at The Bearded Tit. A hub of all things queer in Sydney, The Tit in Redfern is a spiritual home for many of the communities most beloved performers.
