The Artists – In Their Own Words

The Hoodoo Gurus are very proud to once again be part of Rockin’ 4 The Homeless. R4TH raises funds to support Dan Nebe’s amazing work with The Breakfast Club, a community program that provides nourishment – both physical and emotional – for some of the most neglected people in our society. Whether someone is homeless, elderly, poverty-stricken or even just simply lonely, The Breakfast Club is a welcome outpost of generosity in an uncaring world. Rocking’ 4 The Homeless is putting charity right where it is most desperately needed. PS – The Album Rocks – Dave Faulkner – Hoodoo Gurus

“I was homeless as a child with my family. I know it was part of my journey, but I wish for no kids to have to sleep under buildings or beg for food. I wish for no kids to miss breakfast and lunch, dreadlocked and unbathed, going to school barefoot and having to sit out excursions and sport. I wish for a better future for everyone, not just for those who have been lucky or fortunate at birth, or who have more than what they need in life. If people knew about the poverty and struggle that so many families have to go through just to keep a roof over their head..perhaps there would be more given to organisations like R4TH. It is an honour to be amongst the other artists giving their time and energy to this project and also Dan is a total legend (and a good mate) that I am proud to stand behind for this mammothly important issue raising funds and raising awareness.” – Diana Ahnaid

“The guys at Rockin For The Homeless go above and beyond to help out people in need. They’re relentless in their pursuit to raise money and they do it in such a fun way. Rock n roll gigs and the auctioning of rock n roll memorabilia, a couple of beers and a few laughs, it’s always a good time for a good cause.” – Sarah McLeod

Released Tue 1 Dec 2020 on XYZ records, Hoodoo Gurus (Exclusive Unreleased Track), The Superjesus, Diana Anaid & many more Australian bands are amongst 30 Australian acts donating tracks to a double compilation album being released on behalf of Redcliffe’s local ‘Breakfast Club’ to raise funds in the stead of their annual ‘Rockin 4 The Homeless’ Fundraising Concert being cancelled by Covid.

Mastered for free out of love by Leon Zervis (Maroon 5, Muse, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Santana, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, INXS, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston, Beastie Boys, Mobb Deep, Willie Nelson, The Veronicas, Delta Goodrem, Bernard Fanning, Jessica Mauboy, Amy Shark, Peking Duk and more); “Rockin 4 The Homeless 2020: The Greatest Hitters” is a Double disc 32 track behemoth available to purchase in digital or analogue from Dec 1st for $35.00 @ www.rockin4thehomeless.com.au

COVID-19 restrictions saw live music, globally, vanish overnight. For Dan Nebe – Event Director behind the annual ‘Rock 4 The Homeless’ concert in Redcliffe, Queensland – the potential fundraising loss was unacceptable, for many – cataclysmic even.

“We had so much at stake this year. Two events over two days – 100 artists, 75 volunteers, 35 event crew from all over the country – so we had to make a call. The welfare and safety of our volunteers, artists, public and event staff is paramount. [However], as R4TH is what keeps ‘The Breakfast Club’ operating; simply cancelling our concert and leaving it at that was not an option”.

Redcliffe’s not-for-profit, 100% volunteer-run Breakfast Club provide over 12,000 free community meals every year, at a minimal cost of over $2000 per month and annual expenses running to $30k.

And that’s just the breakfast, 100% volunteer run, via their Breakfast Club Hub, community volunteers also provide emergency food parcels, supplies for rough sleepers, phone charging, information about meals, housing, and services, and most importantly: a safe space offering connection and support for isolated and vulnerable people facing complex issues.

Without the funds raised by the live Rock 4 The Homeless event, The Breakfast Club would simply be unable to operate, meaning the area’s most vulnerable people would be left to fall through the cracks.

Being an active member of the Australian touring scene gave Dan inside access to many of the headline artists that have played at the event over the last seven years; and he got to thinking. And it turned out many acts were happy to help when Dan proposed an album release to replace the concert.

Dan Nebe – Creative Director at national (but locally based) Music Merch company Merchworx, has voluntarily pulled Rock 4 The Homeless together over the past 7 years, all the while, mentoring musicians with disabilities, playing in his own band, and tour managing some of Australia’s most beloved acts – and hence has a very personal stake in The Breakfast Club and the people it exists to assist.

Dan’s own story says it all. Following a volatile family breakdown, Dan fell into addiction trying to cope with both the breakdown and separation from his children. Eventually forcing himself into a self-led rehab, Nebe was humbled to find solace in the very community he now helps care for. “People helped me. Total strangers offered me a bed, car or some form of assistance.”

That community spirit became a lifeline when Dan was devastated by the news his son had been killed in a tragic accident. Somehow, Dan found himself wanting to “return what others did for me. The Breakfast Club is the perfect local cause in my eyes. They have no judgment. When we started working together, they had 10 volunteers, now we have over 100. I’m proud of every one of them.”

Most of all, Dan works for the pride of his lost child. “This is my contribution to the community on behalf of my son. I do everything in his memory. It’s the least I can do.”

Though as The Breakfast Club clarifies, Dan is not the only one who finds redemption and aid through Rock 4 The Homeless (R4TH): “R4TH does as a community, something we could not do alone. It pays the bills and changes lives. R4TH is everything to us.” Michelle Gilcrest, Director/Chairperson, Breakfast Club Redcliffe Inc
