Award-winning masters of intrigue Intenso have today released mind-blowing single They Fed The Gryphon With Their Limbs – the first taste of the band’s forthcoming album.
The Perth group is well-known for their unique improvisational approach, and this track sees them breaking down the traditions of time signature, rhythm and chords to build a cinematic wall of sound that ebbs and flows with energy and restraint.
Electric guitars battle with Rhodes piano, distorted synths and samples, while a pulsating beat drives the entrancing swarm of sounds ever-forward.
The track was produced and engineered by multi-award-winning film and stage composer Steve Paraskos, who also plays guitar on the recording.
Steve Elkins, one third of Intenso, says Paraskos challenged the band to go beyond anything they had done before.

“For the first time, we were forced to let go of the production side of the music as Steve took on the enormous task of bringing the individual tracks to life as well as creating the overall sound of the album,” Elkins says.
“The sonic touches and synthesised effects he employed on the raw recordings really helped bring out the depth of emotion in the original played ideas.”

They Fed the Gryphon is menacing, yet utterly enchanting, and would be right at home as part of a film score or contemporary stage production, not to mention on the playlists of experimental music fans.
Intenso formed in Fremantle in 2009, starting as a duet and becoming a trio the following year. With the perfectly balanced combination of Elkins (Futurist, The Kids, Beaverloop) on Rhodes piano, Tobias Anning (Empty Cup, Fall Electric, The Claps) on drums and Adam Ismail (Red Cloud, The Claps) on synths and sampler, the band completed its first studio recording in 2011.
Their most recent EP The Stars Are Cold Toys was released in August 2018, receiving radio airplay at home and abroad.
Listening to Intenso is an immersive experience; a fever dream rich with a relentless cascade of colours and textures.
Ethereal sounds are layered over captivating beats, creating a wall of sound that will intrigue you with its intricacy, soothe you with its beauty and then knock you to the floor with its power.
The band’s creative energy is inspired by the Futurist and Surrealist art movements along with literary writers like Cormac McCarthy and Hunter S Thompson.
As well as their WAM Song of the Year wins in 2015, 2017 and 2018, Intenso were part of The Cinematic Scores II Fringe World Festival show 2013, in which they improvised a film score in real time.
Although improvisation is always how the creative process starts, the band also enjoys the challenge of refining, recording and performing tracks as distinct and recognisable songs.
It takes an insane level of musical skill to even attempt such a task, but these three are up to the challenge.
