People with a disability are too often underrepresented in music and the music industry. Accessible All Areas mini online music festival inverts this, showcasing incredible talent from across the globe by contemporary musicians who are Deaf and disabled.

Curator of Accessible All Areas, award winning Australian disabled musician Eliza Hull says, “Live gigs are often not accessible for people with a disability, venues have stairs, inaccessible toilets, or are too loud. COVID-19 has presented a way that we can use technology to improve access and inclusion for people with a disability to be part of live music.  I curated this event to showcase disabled musicians from all around the world, and hopefully eliminate some of the barriers and obstacles that these disabled musicians may have faced between them and their audience. ’

Interweaving music and interviews, the show aims to be accessible for people with a disability. It will include closed captions and an Auslan interpreter for people who are hard of hearing or Deaf, and video description (short verbal descriptions of action or key visual scenes) for people who are blind or have low vision.

Emily Ulman from Isol-Aid says “Access has always been central to my practice as a music programmer, but running an online festival has taught me how transformative virtual platforms can be. Online initiatives allow artists to reach everyone, not just those who are able to physically attend an event. They also allow access to the stage to performers of all abilities.’

Gaelynn Lea (USA) won NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2016. Gaelynn Lea has appeared in several major festivals over the years, including SXSW, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and Reykjavik Arts Festival. She has opened for well-known bands such as Wilco, The Decemberists, LOW, The Jayhawks, and the industrial rock supergroup Pigface.

In addition to performing and recording, Gaelynn is a sought after speaker on Disability Rights, finding inner freedom, and accessibility in the arts. In recent years she has used her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. She’s been able to share her perspective on PBS NewsHour, BBC World News, The Moth Radio Hour, and through two widely-viewed TEDx Talks.

Manchester-born solo artist, and multi-instrumentalist, James Holt (UK) has long been championed by music industry giants, such as legendary producer Brian Eno.

James was diagnosed with bilateral moderate-to-severe hearing loss at the age of four and has since graduated with a first class honours degree and MA in Music Composition at the University of Salford, in which he received the ‘Best Post-Graduate Student’ award for the highest mark.

An artist of intense honesty, singer and composer Ruth Patterson (UK) bares her soul with courage, conviction and vulnerability. Growing up in the moorlands of North Yorkshire, Ruth inherited a romantic melancholia equally from the land and from the music of such pioneering pop dreamers as Kate Bush and Nick Drake.

Ruth is Sage Gateshead’s 2020 Artist-In-Residence as well as an activist and ambassador for the organisation Attitude Is Everything, who campaigns to improve Deaf and disabled people’s access to live music. She has toured extensively, created three acclaimed albums as leader of folk-rock band Holy Moly & the Crackers and has had music featured in Radio, TV, Film and Theatre.

Eliza Hull (AUS) is a musical artist known for her stirring lyrics, and haunting emotive vocals. Not for the faint hearted, her music will evoke nostalgic sensations, as she sings about heartbreak and her innermost feelings.

Eliza is a proud person with a disability, a condition known as ‘Charcot Marie Tooth.’ Since releasing her most recent EP ‘How we disappeared,’ which is a rich blend of indie, folk-tinged tracks; Eliza has felt empowered to share her unique story. Eliza is now heavily involved with the disability community, and has become an advocate within the music industry. Recently she spoke at ‘Changes festival’ about accessibility within the industry, and performed at Dylan Alcott’s music festival ‘Ability Fest.’ In addition she recently wrote the music for TV show ‘And then something changed’ about a child with a disability for ABC Kids, and has had her music used for ‘ListenAble’ a podcast about disability, hosted by radio presenters Dylan Alcott and Angus O’Loughlin. Eliza has also had syncs through North American TV shows ‘Awkward’, ‘Teen Wolf’ and Canada’s ‘Saving Hope’ and Australian drama ‘The Heights.’

Previous releases of Eliza’s include debut album ‘The Bones Of Us’ which has been strongly supported by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBI, ABC, PBS and 3RRR. Eliza has a strong live following, selling out headline shows, and along the way sharing stages with Owl Eyes, SAFIA, Katie Noonan, Husky and Mia Dyson.
