Jess Ribeiro’s third album LOVE HATE (released in April this year) was confirmation (if ever it was needed) that Ribeiro is one of this country’s most gifted and enigmatic songwriters, a master of genre, nonchalance, double-entendre, intuition and melody. It doesn’t come as a surprise then that she has also tried her hand at directing. Premiered today via Pilerats – Jess has shared her nostalgic new video for ‘Young Love’ ahead of her Australian tour this July. Click here to watch.

‘Young Love’ – a standout sleeper on her new record – is noticeably different from Ribeiro’s previous work; “It’s an electronic journey I’ve not been down before” said Jess. Featuring a trip-hop groove and a more heavily processed electronic sound, it more than proves Ribeiro’s versatility. With the guitar swapped out for a Nord, and the beats spare and dramatic, it’s the synth soundtrack for a doomed romance movie.

The song was inspired when Jess was waiting in peak hour traffic. Ribeiro explains –I saw two teenagers entangled together at a tram stop, they brought up memories in me of how passionate and intense life for teenagers can be.” Directed and edited by Ribeiro – alongside Melbourne photographer and videographer Khan Nguyen, the video follows this same narrative. Ribeiro has dedicated this song to her childhood friend who disappeared after she finished high school. As Ribeiro said We had lots of mutual dreams for the future. The video features her niece Bella, and Prince, both aspiring artists.”

Jess Ribeiro has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most beloved songwriters. With a new band in tow, she is about to embark on a run of Australian dates – and will be joined by some incredible supports. Don’t miss out – tickets and details below.
