Just a few short months after the release of her critically acclaimed third solo album Sixty Summers, and on the eve of the ARIA Awards for which she has been nominated for Best Video for the incredible visual of her single ‘Dance’, Julia Stone today reveals details for Everything Is Christmas. The 14-track album of festive favourites spun with Julia’s very own magic touch, will be released on 10 December via BMG. Everything Is Christmas will be available digitally, on CD and on a limited release vinyl of only 1,000 copies, which comes with an extra bonus track ‘Silent Night’, all personally signed by Julia. Pre-orders are live now.
To celebrate the record and awaken the spirit of the holiday season, Julia will be taking Everything Is Christmas on the road with a handful of live shows beginning at Archies Creek Pub, Victoria on 16 December, Hubert Restaurant in Sydney on 20 December, and finishing up at The Barn On The Ridge in Morton, New South Wales on 23 December. Tickets are on sale now HERE.
For Julia, Christmas has always had an element of magic. It is in the scent of an Australian summer – the smell of mangoes, of pine from the dying Christmas tree, of sunscreen and freshly cut grass. Magic is found in the familial food rituals – prawns after a long day at the beach, grandma’s pav, mince pies. The magic, too, is in the music – familiar, warm and comforting.
“Christmas music has always been such a beautiful and nostalgic part of my life,” says Julia. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make. It has been in me for so long. These are some of the very first songs that really got under my skin as a kid. Familiar like that favourite jumper you will never throw away. It has been a dream of mine to make a record of my favourite Christmas songs, with my favourite people.”
Everything Is Christmas captures what Christmas means to Julia and undoubtedly countless others across 14 incredibly original renditions of favourites, all drenched in Julia’s signature vocal. From the fragility of songs like ‘River’ and the infectiousness of tracks like WHAM’s ‘Last Christmas’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ to the beauty and sincerity of ‘Away in A Manger’ and mainstays like ‘Joy To The World’ and ‘Come All Ye Faithful’, this record is filled to the brim with nostalgia.
Just as Christmas itself brings loved ones together, Everything Is Christmas was produced through a tender host of collaborators and friends. The album was recorded at Reservoir Studio in Midtown, New York with Julia behind the production alongside long-time friend and collaborator Thomas Bartlett (St Vincent, Norah Jones, Yoko Ono) – who produced her most recent solo record Sixty Summers. American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon joined Julia on the record – he has performed across the world in venues like Carnegie Hall, The Barbican, The Opera House and has released 11 albums throughout his career. Also lending their expertise were James Gilligan, an extraordinary bass player and pedal steel player, Leigh Fisher on drums and Nico Muhly, an American contemporary classical music composer and arranger on strings.
“One New York winter, we all got together and, in a week, recorded these songs live. It was one of my favourite recording sessions,” Julia recalls. “There’s a freedom and a beauty to singing songs you know, we all know, so well. I wanted to make that record. The way I felt those songs. And I wanted to make it with people that I felt inspired and comfortable with.”
Everything Is Christmas is enchanting; and not unlike the Christmas holiday period, sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes life-affirming. It is a record full of joy and sadness – evoking Julia’s own memories of being home, surrounded by love and family, as well as being away from home, isolated and lonely.
“This record encapsulates my fondest childhood memories tinged by the reality that so many are forever missing from my life today,” Julia says. “I called the record, ‘Everything is Christmas’ because Christmas can hold one moment in time and a whole lifetime of memories. It marks the passage of time for us and for our people. Everything is a celebration, and everything is painful. Everything is love and everything can be lost. Everything is Christmas.”

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
