More than a year since the release of her ground-breaking EP, In The Sky, today Australian indie-pop sensation Mallrat returns with a brand-new single, video, and news of her third EP.

The new song, ‘Charlie,’ is arguably the most heartfelt and illuminating of her career. Stripped bare, the song is largely a gentle combination of woozy piano chords and Mallrat’s subtle, vulnerable vocals – her patented lackadaisical and charming delivery style at the forefront. The song gradually gathers steam as it progresses, picking up pitter patter beats, bass thumps and heavenly harmonies as it reaches its crescendo, while simultaneously lyrically peeling away layers of the Mallrat persona we’ve grown to love, and revealing a greater glimpse of Grace Shaw – the person – in a way that we’ve never really seen before.

Mallrat has always written music that connects with people on a different level. Her songs are filled with ethereal images of angels and being high in the sky, alongside keen, observational takes on the mundanity of being a young person in the modern age and the trappings that come along with that. It’s a distinctive style that has seen her become the soundtrack to a generation of pop fans, as well as taught them the lessons that anyone can reach the heights they aspire to, and that life is worth celebrating for what you already have and love. Those tropes can once again be heard in ‘Charlie’ (named after her beloved pet Labrador and pop culture icon in his own right), however, Mallrat also discusses elements of her own life that have never previously been part of her story, and with its release she enters a new phase of her song writing career that ups the ante significantly.

On ‘Charlie’ she sings about both her parents (“Daddy worked out west and he worked so hard, my mum she smells like cigarettes and they broke each other’s heart”) and lets us in on the strained relationship she has with her mother (“She says that love is like a chess game / And boys gotta do the chasing / When did I start taking her advice? / I raised myself and that’s alright”). Those revelations create a whole new dimension to the understanding of Mallrat’s music. We already appreciated her as a self-made star who threw caution to the wind and transformed herself into a platinum-selling artist. With ‘Charlie’ though, we learn just how self-empowered Grace Shaw is, and what she’s been able to overcome in order to get to where she is today. It’s just another element that adds to why she is heralded as one of Australia’s most important contemporary artists.

The release of ‘Charlie’ has been accompanied by a new video that couldn’t be more Mallrat. Directed by Tim Hardy (whom Mallrat previously worked with on the Cubsport video for ‘Video’) the clip captures her in her element – wearing floral dresses, riding bikes through the backstreets of Melbourne, and once again celebrating her low-key horse girl love. Oh, and not to mention cameos from her dad and the song’s namesake, the wonder dog, Charlie.

‘Charlie’ also stands as the first single to be released from Mallrat’s forthcoming third EP, titled Driving Music and set for release September 6 via Dew Process and Universal Music Australia. It’s the next chapter in an already storied career that saw Mallrat reach new heights earlier this year by climbing to #7 on the triple j Hottest 100 with ‘Groceries,’ which would also eventually go platinum in Australia.

It’s also been a huge year on the road for Mallrat, having supported King Princess and Maggie Rogerson international tours, as well as selling out her own headline shows across Australia, and increasingly across the world. She’s now poised to head out on a run of huge dates with her friend and collaborator Allday. They’ll first tour the country nationally starting Saturday, 17th August in Perth, before embarking on a US tour together in September. She’s also set to perform a number of big festival slots for the rest of the year, waving the flag high for Australian music alongside a cavalcade of international superstars. Dates and ticket info below.

‘Charlie’ marks a new kind of Mallrat music. We can’t wait to see what else she shows us on Driving Music. One thing is for certain though – it’s going to be a hell of a ride.
