In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Melbourne Music Week (MMW) will kick things off in style this Thursday, taking over the CBD for a massive Opening Night party; a wild night of 100+ free performances starting at 4pm, kicking on until 5am.

Twelve of the city’s best music venues will swing open their doors for Live Music Safari (supported by Coopers and PBS), allowing everyone to curate their own live music adventure, weaving from venue to venue and set to set as they please.

Indie/punk fans can catch bands like U-Bahn, Loose Tooth and Civic at Max Watts, The Curtin and The Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar. Boney, Section 8, The Toff, Whiteheart and Ferdyduke have Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz fans covered with sets by Baro, Pookie, Soju Gang, 2nd Thought, Ladi6 and more. Colour will transform into a two-level, all night party hosted by Thickwave, featuring Wahe, Lady Lash, Hextape, and Elle Shimada.

Out on the streets, the Songs of Melbourne busking program will see more than 20 buskers performing unique versions of some of Melbourne’s favourite songs as voted by PBS listeners. Keep an ear out for Paul Kelly’s Leaps and Bounds, Courtney Barnett’s Depreston and Frente’s Accidently Kelly Street emanating through the CBD between 5:30pm-6:30pm.

People can also hunt down special performances by Naretha Williams, Edd Fisher and Kōtare as part of SWELL 5.0 / Frequency; an immersive, choose your own adventure-style live-music journey that puts its audience front and centre. SWELL 5.0 will raise the frequency of Melbourne’s streets and laneways, interweaving live music and art to inspire joy, empathy, inclusiveness and hope. SWELL 5.0 / Frequency performances start at 6:30pm on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets.

Councillor Rohan Leppert, Chair of the Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio, said Melbourne Music Week 2019 is the City of Melbourne’s biggest festival yet, with the free Opening Night party the perfect start to a ten day showcase of the city’s thriving music scene.

“Never before has MMW been so diverse and it all kicks off with a completely free CBD-wide party on Thursday night,” Cr Leppert said.

“For the last 10 years MMW has delivered thousands of festival goers an unforgettable experience and 2019 will be no different. We’re also incredibly excited for the return of MMW Hub, Kubik, our original Hub and an amazing venue for Melburnians of all ages to come and enjoy a huge array of musical talent from across Australia and the world.”

Following Opening Night, Melbourne Music Week’s 2019 Hub Kubik will light up in Alexandra Gardens to host local and international music acts every evening from Friday 15 November – Saturday 23 November, plus activations from partners, Coopers, Jack Daniel’s and Thatchers. An outdoor music venue unlike any other, Kubik is a German-designed structure, by Balestra Berlin that lights up in response to music and remains a MMW fan favourite since first appearing in Birrarung Marr as part of the 2011 event.

Headline events at Kubik include a sold out party with CC:DISCO!, a headline set by French electronic icon Kittin, a live drag show and rave courtesy of POOF DOOF, a night of Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz curated by The Operatives, plus local talent Stonefield and Body Type presented by Jack Daniel’s, and heaps more.
