Who’s ready for some soul searching?

Worldwide pop punk princess Avril Lavigne is back in a new light with the release of her second single Tell Me It’s Over from her upcoming sixth studio album Head Above Water, which will be released on 15th February 2019. After the release of her first single Head Above Water, Avril has continued down a ballad type path with Tell Me It’s Over, teasing its release over social media. Avril rose to fame in 2002 with the release of her first single Complicated from her first studio album Let Go, which has gone on to sell more than 16 million copies worldwide. After owning the 2000’s with her individual rock chick persona, the starlet has gone on to achieve great success with five successful studio albums, as well as worldwide number one smash hits.

The instrumental of the track sounds very old school and vintage. Avril uses a series of instruments to open the song and keep a levelled consistency. Once the chorus hits, the beat becomes more powerful and dramatic as it suits the climax of Avril’s large vocal range and emotional lyrical content. As the track has a very soul type feel, we see Avril take a different direction with her music as she uses background vocals and instruments in a way that you would expect to hear them in a 70’s track. As we’ve never really seen the starlet experiment this far from her usual pop/rock material, its refreshing for listeners to see that the artist can still be inspired and explore different genres, without losing her iconic vocals and all around sound.

“I’m tired of circular motions

They leave me dizzy and confused”

The lyrics of this track touch on themes of repetition and heartbreak. Avril sings about a cycle with her loved one that keeps occurring. Her partner keeps making the same mistakes over and over again and although they never change their ways, she always allows them to come back to her. She emphasises the fact that when they touch her, the feelings never changes, therefore she needs to know now if it’s really over or not so that she can get past the heartache and move on. Although Avril is renowned for making incredible ballads, the soulful rhythm along with the masters of her vocal range gives her a deeper, more mature sound. Tell Me It’s Over allows the starlet to expand her horizons lyrically and shine within a new light.

In the music scene of 2018 its safe to say that Avril is still as relevant as she was 16 years ago. There’s no other artist that has the uniqueness and sound that she has been able to achieve and put out to the world year after year. From punk rocker to soul singer, she can do no wrong. Tell Me It’s Over is the perfect example of the singers’ ability to perform and deliver across all genres, as well as create meaningful messages that really hit the heart. With the ongoing success that she has been able to achieve, I’m sure her sixth studio album will be another masterpiece. If you’re looking for a track to listen to that’s got that little bit of extra oomph, Avril’s your girl.
