On July 4 and 5 2018, CHANGES, a collaboration between The Push, Yarra City Council, Music Victoria and the Victorian music community, is assembling a roster of ground breaking voices, programming, and events to outline a new path for the contemporary music sector. Across the realms of music, tech, talks and ideas, CHANGES will provide a platform for a roster of groundbreaking voices to ignite one question: What’s next?

What is your name and/or artist name?

Nancie Schipper.

.

Which CHANGES showcase will you be performing at?

Music Victoria Regional Showcase on Thursday, 5th July.

.

From a Musician’s perspective, are there any CHANGES talks/workshops/events that you would recommend musicians to attend (i.e. topics musicians might tend to overlook)?

‘Elevating a visual experience with technology’ and ‘Hear Me Out’ – both are super relevant and sometimes forgotten about by musicians.

.

CHANGES is all about the current music industry, the talent and its future – what advice would you give to aspiring musicians and artists who hope that one day they can break into the Australian music industry?

It’s cliché, and I’ve heard it a thousand times… but keep playing. The saying ‘the more you do, the better you get’ certainly rings true – whether it be playing an instrument, songwriting or gigging, you can only improve. Get your music up on Triple J Unearthed too!

.

Do you think there is any aspect of the current music industry that needs change?

I think it’s fantastic how much noise and progress people in the music industry has been generating about underrepresentation of females and minority groups, but there’s still a long way to go and that is something I’d really like to see improved!

.

What events are you looking forward to seeing personally over the next two days at CHANGES? And why?

Everything! It was really hard to narrow it down, but I am the most excited about two of the Focused 4/4 sessions. ‘The Benefits Of Being A Multi-Disciplinary’ in particular, as in 2018 it is so important to have and develop as many skills as possible as an artist, and working on weaknesses. Also, the ‘Women In Music – Hearing Voices You Can’t See’ session, for the reasons mentioned above!

What is your name and/or artist name?

My artist name is yergurl, but my real name is Fae Scott.

.

Which CHANGES showcase will you be performing at?

I’ll be at the Regional Showcase at The Grace Darling Hotel, 14 Smith Street Collingwood on the 5th of July.

.

From a Musician’s perspective are there any CHANGES talks/workshops/events that you would recommend musicians to attend (i.e. topics musicians might tend to overlook)?

Well I personally think any musician should consider attending one of the workshops (which suits them most) because it’d be a great learning opportunity! I couldn’t pick anything specific, but I think all young musicians should have a look through the program to potentially find heaps of beneficial talks and workshops to attend.

.

CHANGES is all about the current music industry, the talent and its future – what advice would you give to aspiring musicians and artists who hope that one day they can break into the Australian music industry?

I think the most important piece of advice I could give is to find what you’re into, how you want to present yourself and just embody it unapologetically. It’s impossible to make meaningful music if you’re not being yourself. It’s so important to keep in my mind that there’s room for everybody in the world, so if you think that people won’t like your music or whatever, just do you without hesitation, put your heart and soul into it and just see. Even if you think you’re too “mainstream”… there’s plenty of mainstream musicians and plenty of not… there’s room for EVERYBODY.

.

Do you think there is any aspect of the current music industry that needs change?

I wasn’t particular fond of the kind of trends that were being constantly repeated in mainstream pop, but in all honesty, I think all music is going through a desperately needed change right now and I’m noticing it everywhere. Even mainstream artists aren’t just copying each other so much. Music is starting to sound more unique and it feels more creative at the moment so I really hope this continues.

.

What events are you looking forward to seeing personally over the two days at CHANGES? And why?

.

Well I’m excited for the Regional Showcase, and not just because I’m performing in it. Only just now have I realised there’s a wider world of artists out there and there not just in the cities. I can relate to these artists and I want to know what people like me are doing. I also definitely want to see Christie Morgan talk about visual technology for elevating our brands.
