Singer-songwriter and producer Chris Lanzon has well and truly left his boyband days behind him. With two solo EP’s under his belt – Melancholy & Far From Perfect – listeners now get to experience a much more mature sound with his record label, Hunnydew Records, describing his discography as “memorable songs full of raw emotion, introspective yet relatable experiences and comforting vulnerability”.

On Friday the 25th of February, Federation Square was the home to Hunnydew Records live artists showcase. Fed Square was bustling with patrons and passerby’s eager for some live music after months of a literal entertainment drought and Chris Lanzon was ready to deliver.

Opening his set with Everest followed by Diamonds on the Water, by his third song Unsaid, Chris had gathered his crowd and had many of us sitting front and centre of the stage to watch him perform, not to miss a thing. Continuing with Figure Me Out and More Than Words, Chris had Federation Square enthralled by his voice and its easy to see why, as someone who has been able to see Chris perform numerous times over the years, I believe this was the best he’s ever sounded – to date of course.

A pleasant surprise was when Chris introduced Eluera – a fellow up and coming Australian musician – to join him on stage to perform the yet to be released collaboration ‘June’. In Chris’ words the song will “rip your heart out” and he was not wrong about that. Fellow attendees were also lucky enough to hear another unreleased song titled ‘Dark Side’ which is on its way to being my new favourite once we get a studio version. To close out his set Chris deliver a lovely rendition of Iris by Goo Goo Dolls and my current personal favourite Always Forever.

Keeping his stage production very minimal, Chris doesn’t need any fancy lights of effects to deliver a show. With just him and his guitar, the simplistic approach allows you to completely focus on Chris, his voice, the experiences he’s sharing in his lyrics and his performance. As I said before, I think this show was the best Chris has ever sounded and its only going to get better from here.
