Cosmo’s Midnight

What Comes Next

(Album Review)

Reviewer: Victoria Lewis

It’s been 5 years since Sydney twin duo Cosmo’s Midnight invaded our ears with their song Phantasm. Strength to strength singles and 2 EPs later, we finally have our hands on their 12 track debut album.

Its been a little over a week since its release and its been getting a lot of love. During the week of its release date, Radio station Triple J made Cosmo’s Midnight‘s Album What Comes Next their feature album. Playing tracks to their listeners before they even officially dropped.

Cosmo’s Midnight‘s album features already released singles, that include History, Get To Know, Polarised and Lowkey – which are absolute bangers.

The album begins with a track named Confidence ft Woodes. All you can hear is a piano at first and during the song it builds to a funky infectious drum beat. With Woodes graceful vocals it fits perfectly.

Track 2 – Lowkey, one their recently released singles off the album. Lowkey ft Buddy Jay Prince, delivers this RnB, rap influence that shows a different side of Cosmo’s Midnight. Lowkey, is not a low key track at all.

Track 3 – Montage, is one of their instrumental tracks on the album. You can hear the complexity and feel that electro vibe in the music. The flute melody that features is fire. Once I heard the melody, I couldn’t get it out of my head.

Track 4 – With U ft Panama is smooth sailing. The track is like you’re drifting away in a calm ocean. The lyrics juxtaposition this. Panama sings about a relationship that could possibly end soon. Which adds a needed depth to the track.

Track 5 – Talk to me ft Tove Styrke is an upbeat groovy pop song. Tove Styrke‘s vocals add dynamic emotional elements to the song. Especially during the bridge where she belts the lyrics,

“Talk to me”.

Track 6 – Get to know ft Wintson Surfshirt has RnB influence written all over it. Winston Surfshift adds his fluffy vocals and send us to cloud 9.

Track 7 –  Where U Been ft Boogie takes us back to the land of Hip Hop like with their earlier track Lowkey. The song starts with a synth whistle  and drops in to this gangster rap and bass line. At the chorus it strips back to cool RnB; what a ride.

Track 8 – What Comes Next – Interlude is a beautiful 44 second track that makes you think, where are we going now. Featuring a simple synth keyboard melody, its short and sweet.

Track 9 – Polarised, another single release. With a drum intro and set up that flows into a pretty synth electro world. Accompanied with airy vocals, this track is sweet and a more simple track from Cosmo’s Midnight.

Track 10 – History, originally a single that was released back in 2017. History also came in at 140 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 – 200 2017. This pop feel track really lets the lyrics and vocal lead, allowing its listeners to sing along. Which is not a bad thing at all. Sing it at the top of your lungs!

Track 11 – Dreamer ft Pauli The PSM is a floating dreamy dream. Putting your head space somewhere up in the atmosphere. Pauli The PSM vocals are calming and match well with the instrumental. Making this song a favorite of mine.

Track 12 – Lovelight concludes the album. This instrumental track really sums up the album. Lovelight, represents their sound with influences from pop, electro and RnB that also appear across the album. The complexity and vibe of the track shines a light on who Cosmo’s Midnight is.

Overall, Cosmo Midnight’s album What Comes Next, does leave us with that very question, what does comes next?
After a highly anticipated debut album release that features other artist that we know and love. Not to mention that each vocal fits perfectly to each song, like a complete parcel. What Comes Next is a banger album that gets you up dancing and singing along to every note and lyric.
