Who’s ready for a ballad like no other?

.

Pop sensation Demi Lovato probably just dropped what has to be the most confrontational track to her catalogue yet. Randomly scrolling through my Instagram feed at midnight, the starlet posted a video montage of herself in past situations of struggle over the last ten years with the caption “my truth… #sober”. Given the caption, her new drop Sober in all honesty has to be her most raw and truthful track yet. Just a little flashback for everyone, Demi rose to fame on Disney Channel’s Camp Rock in 2008. Fast forward a decade, she is now touring for her sixth studio album Tell Me You Love Me which spawned 2017 worldwide hit Sorry Not Sorry. The songstress also has successful new track collaborations circulating right now such as Solo with Clean Bandit and Fall in Line with Christina Aguilera.

The instrumental for the track uses a simple piano that is commonly used within her discography for tracks that are more meaningful or personal. The use of light harmonies in the background supports the easy going tempo of the piano. There’s a faint sound within the instrumental that sounds almost like wind pushing through together with the depth of the lyrical content, greatly supporting the emotional feeling of the track. Sober is also probably one of her only ballads where Demi doesn’t showcase her vocal ability or range to her normal expectations. This gives me a sense of realness as she is purely singing this track to get a certain message across rather than using her usual book of tricks to glorify a particular outcome.

‘I’m sorry that I’m here again,

I promise I’ll get help”

The lyrics to this track focus on themes of personal struggle and relapse. In Sober, Demi basically confesses her recent challenges with facing her six-year sobriety. The lyrics however, give listeners and indication that the songstress may have feasibly relapsed from her ongoing battle with addiction. In the verses of the track, Demi sings about the disappointment she may be to her fans, not living up to her role model status and the ongoing stress that has caused her to burn bridges and say goodbye to friends and loved ones that are unintentional. The chorus is a hard-hitting apology to her parents for not being sober anymore, as well as leaving evidence behind such as spilled drinks. The pain in her vocals prove the bravery and strength of the starlet as she sings about a truth that no other artist has ever revealed in their art to this extensive level.

Demi has completely left herself stripped and vulnerable after this brutal confession of a track. Whether listeners can relate to her struggles or not, it’s a track that will open the ears and tackle the mind as its powerful impact is one that cannot be ignored. As her fans have given the songstress never ending support over the years for continuously opening up to the world with her journey to inspire and influence others, Demi has truly just hit an entirely different ballpark. The honesty of Sober is a bold message that has opened up the pop scene to a possible avenue of new beginnings. Have a listen down below; this rare masterpiece could be the start of something new.
